The Clippers remained hot with an 8-2 win over Buffalo.
Lefty David Huff struck out 10 Bisons without a walk over seven innings, allowing one run on four hits. After allowing a solo home run with one out in the second inning he retired 17 of the final 18 batters he faced.
Shortstop Luis Valbuena provided all the necessary Columbus offense with two homers and seven RBI, tying a record for a Bisons visitor with Nashville's Drew Denson, who recorded seven May 13, 1993.
The clubs wrap up the four-game set Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
Kinston Splits Doubleheader with Salem
Kinston split a doubleheader with the Salem Red Sox, Monday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Kinston got a complete game shutout from T.J. House to win game one 2-0, while falling to Salem 2-1 in game number two. With the split, Kinston (33-30) stays three games back of first place Myrtle Beach with six games to play in the first half.
In game one, House has his best outing of the season, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The no-no was broken up by a Peter Hissey bunt in the top of the frame. After a walk, a double play got Kinston out of trouble. House (4-6) would not give up another hit, walking four and striking out six in the outing. It was the second complete game pitched by Kinston this season. It was the Carolina League leading seventh shutout thrown by Kinston this year.
Salem starter Anthony Ranaudo almost matched House, giving up two hits in the first five innings. Ranaudo’s defense would let him down in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tyler Holt started off with a walk. On a hit and run Casey Frawley singled and Holt advanced to third. After an Abner Abreu strikeout, Holt scored when Salem catcher Dan Butler delivered a wide throw of first base on a pickoff attempt. Kinston would add a run later in the inning when Frawley scored from third on a wild pitch. Ranaudo (1-2) took the loss, giving up three hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings.
In the second game of the double header, Kinston got to Salem starter Tom Ebert early. Tyler Holt started the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk. With one out, Kinston newcomer Anthony Gallas delivered a run scoring double. Kinston starting pitcher Clayton Cook made just one early mistake, giving up a two run, home run to David Mailman in the top of the second inning. Mailman hit the homer after Dan Butler led off with a walk. The smash gave Salem a 2-1 lead.
Kinston got their first two batters on base safely in the bottom of the second, but could not score a run. Ebert went four innings, giving up one run on three hits. Ebert struck out one and walked three batters. Cook went 6 2/3 innings giving up five hits and two earned runs. He walked one and struck out a season high nine.
Jeremiah Bayer (3-1) got the win in relief for Salem, giving up just one hit in the final three innings. Kinston got the first two batters on in the seventh inning, but a failed bunt and a double play ended the game.
The two teams will meet Tuesday night in Kinston for game three of the four game series.
Note: Akron and Lake County were off on Monday.
