Game Recaps 6/11: Kipnis paces Kinson to win

Clippers sneak by 7-6

The Columbus Clippers struck back ate to take a 7-6 win over Buffalo on Saturday night. Chad Huffman scored the go-ahead run from third on a passed ball in the eighth after back and forth fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Over 4.2 innings, Kluber allowed three runs (all earned) on five hits and walks with five strikeouts. Second baseman Jason Kipnis led the offensive attack going 3-for-4 with a homer, 3 RBI and a walk.  Ezequiel Carrera stole his International League-leading 20th and 21st bases of the season, the latter setting up the Clippers' first run before a Kipnis RBI single in the first.

Martinez took the win, while Josh Judy closed out the ninth inning for the save.

Sanchez Blasts Aeros Past Senators, 4-3

Karexon Sanchez hit a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the seventh inning that proved to be the game-winning run as the Akron Aeros won game two of a three-game series against the Harrisburg Senators 4-3 Saturday at Metro Bank Park.

Righty Jimmy Barthmaier allowed the Sanchez home run and suffered the loss for the Senators pitching 2.2 innings and striking out four while walking none.

Right-hander Steve Wright pitched five innings of relief to earn the win for the Aeros giving up one earned run on three hits, walking two and striking out four. Right-handed pitcher Cory Burns pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning to record his 15th save of 2011.

Saturday’s game also featured a 43-minute rain delay.

The Aeros (30-33) scored in the top of the first inning. Tim Fedroff led off with a ground-rule double hitting a ball that hopped over the right field wall. With two outs, Fedroff stole third and later scored on a passed ball to give Akron a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived as the Senators (34-26) answered in the home half of the first. Steve Lombardozzi led off with a solo home run to tie the game 1-1. With no one out, Josh Johnson reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a Chris Rahl groundout. Johnson scored on a Tyler Moore RBI groundout to give Harrisburg a 2-1 lead.

Stephen King hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to give the Senators a 3-1 lead.

The Aeros answered back to tie in the top of the third inning. With one out, Kyle Bellows doubled and scored on a Fedroff RBI single to make it 3-2. Fedroff advanced to second on a Juan Diaz single. Beau Mills followed with an RBI single scoring Fedroff and tying the game 3-3.

Akron retook the lead in the top of the seventh inning on the Sanchez solo home run and went on to the win.

The Aeros will go for the sweep of the Senators Sunday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Paolo Espino, who is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA in 2011. He will face fellow right-hander Brad Peacock, who is 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA this season. First pitch is at 2 p.m.

Myrtle Beach Hangs On For a 6-5 Win Over Kinston

Myrtle Beach hung on for a 6-5 win over Kinston Saturday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the win, Myrtle Beach (36-26) is now four games ahead of Kinston (31-29) for first place in the Carolina League Southern Division.

With All-Star Drew Pomeranz on the mound for Kinston, Myrtle Beach went up in the top of the second inning. After back-to-back singles started the inning, a sacrifice bunt and RBI ground out led to a 1-0 Pelican lead. In the top of the third inning, Ryan Strausborger started a two-out rally with a single and a stolen base. After a walk, Jared Prince drove Strausborger home with a run scoring single.

Kinston tied the score in the bottom of the second inning when Casey Frawley hit a two-out, two run home run. The blast to left field was Frawley’s team leading eighth home run of the year.

The score would stay tied until the top of the fifth inning. With one out in the fifth, Abner Abreu misplayed a drive in center field, hit off the bat of Mitch Hilligoss. Abreu was charged with an error as Hilligoss made it to second base. After Strausborger walked, Chris McGuiness flew out. With two outs in the inning Prince struck again, this time with a double, plating Hilligoss and Strausborger. Vinny Difazio followed with a single to drive in Prince, giving the Pelicans a 5-2 lead. Pomeranz (2-2) picked up his second loss of the year, giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven. His ERA moves up slightly to 2.01.

Kinston would come right back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Justin Toole led off with a single. After a one-out error allowed Delvi Cid to reach, Toole came home from third base on a squeeze bunt from Tyler Holt. After another error by shortstop Leury Garcia, Bo Greenwell delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Cid and cut the Pelican led to one run.

After Kyle Landis came in from the K-Tribe bullpen for two scoreless innings, Chris Jones gave up a solo home run to DeFazio in the eighth inning to extend the Pelican’s lead back to two. Kinston would add another run in the bottom of the eighth when Tyler Cannon would unload a two-out double and Adam Abraham followed with a run scoring single. Holt would go 3-for-4 for Kinston.

Boscan picked up the win for Myrtle Beach, Johan Yan got the save by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

The rubber match of the three game series takes place Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. Game time 1:30 pm. Brett Brach will take the hill for Kinston, squaring off against Carolina League All-Star Joe Wieland.

Captains Lose Fourth in Row, 6-1 to Snappers

Beloit won their second straight against Lake County on Saturday night with a 6-1 win. Snapper starter Pat Dean no-hit the Captains through 6.2 innings en route to his first win of the season.

Beloit got all the scoring they needed in the bottom of the third inning. Wang-Wei Lin led things off with a solo homerun to giving the Snappers a 1-0 lead. Michael Gonzales and Daniel Ortiz hit back to back doubles to make it 2-0. Jario Perez added a third run with an RBI single to right.

In the fourth, Beloit added three more for a 6-0 lead. RBI singles from Hyeong-Rok Choi, Daniel Santana and Nate Roberts provided the scoring.

In the top of the seventh inning, and two outs, the Snappers made a pitching change as Nelvin Fuentes entered in relief of Dean. Jesus Aguilar quickly ended the no-hit bid with a single to leftfield.

The Captains got their only run in the top of the ninth innings, Anthony Gallas who walked with one out reached and came around and scored on Jesus Aguilar’s RBI single to center making it 6-1.

Pat Dean (1-0) picked up his first win of the season tossing 6.2 scoreless innings of no-hit baseball, walking just two and striking out a season high nine. Cole Cook (2-7) took the loss allowing all six runs on eleven hits, walking two and striking out four.

Lake County takes on Beloit on Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field at 3:00PM, to wrap up their six game road trip. Getting the start for the Captains will RHP Mike Goodnight (5-3) against RHP A.J. Achter (0-1) for the Snappers.
