Matt McBride hit a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the third inning that proved to be the difference as the Akron Aeros won game one of a three-game series against the Harrisburg Senators 9-5 Friday at Metro Bank Park.
McBride hit two home runs in the game and now has 11 on the season.
Right-hander Austin Adams recorded the win the for the Aeros pitching five innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits, walking three and striking out five. Right-handed pitcher Matt Langwell pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.
Righty Tanner Roark was saddled with the loss for Harrisburg lasting just 2.2 innings, giving up seven earned runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three.
The Senators (34-25) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Steve Lombardozzi led off with a single and stole second with one out. Chris Rahl singled him home to give Harrisburg a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Derek Norris walked and Bill Rhinehart reached on a Matt Lawson fielding error allowing Rahl to score. Archie Gilbert followed with a three-run home run to left field to give the Senators a 5-0 lead.
The Aeros (29-33) answered back in the top of the third inning. Jordan Henry led off with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. Kyle Bellows singled him home to cut the Senators lead to 5-1. With two outs, Juan Diaz doubled home Bellows to make it 5-2. Diaz came across to score on a Beau Mills RBI single cutting the lead to 5-3. Following the single, Chun Chen was hit by a pitch and Nick Weglarz walked to load the bases. McBride followed with a grand slam depositing a ball over the left field wall.
Akron added a run in the top of the eighth inning on a Diaz sacrifice fly.
McBride homered again in the top of the ninth inning as Akron went on to the win.
The Aeros and Senators will continue their three-game series Saturday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 2-4 with a 4.94 ERA in 2011. He will face fellow southpaw Oliver Perez, who is 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
Clippers game suspended
Friday night’s International League game between the Columbus Clippers and the Rochester Red Wings has been suspended, with the Clippers winning 5‐1, in the bottom of the 3rd inning due to inclement weather. The two clubs will resume play when the Clippers head to Rochester for a four game series from 8/12‐8/15.
Kinston draws closer to 1st with win
Kinston scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and beat Myrtle Beach 4-3 Friday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the win, the K-Tribe (31-28) is just three games behind the first place Pelicans in the Southern Division with ten games to play. It was the 17th win in the last 23 tries for Kinston. Kinston has now won ten straight games decided by one run.
Marty Popham was very good, making a spot start on the mound for Kinston. Popham gave up just four hits and one run in six strong innings of work. Popham did not walk a batter and struck out five. Myrtle Beach got to Popham just once, when Santiago Chirino hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning.
Leading 1-0 going into the top of the seventh, Myrtle Beach would expand their lead. With Kinston reliever Tyler Sturdevant in the game, the Pelicans used back-to-back doubles from Jared Hoying and Chirino to take a 2-0 advantage. After a Kinston error, Chirino would score on an infield single by Larry Garcia that hit off of Sturdevant’s leg.
Carolina League All-Star and wins leader Robbie Ross lived up to the hype early, no-hitting Kinston into the sixth inning. The K-Tribe would finally get to the All-Star in the top of the seventh when Abner Abreu led off with a double. Chase Burnette grounded out to advance Abreu to third base. Doug Pickens then completed the run manufacturing with an RBI ground out of his own.
Down 3-1 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, Kinston started the comeback with three straight hits off of Ross. Tyler Holt began the bottom of the eighth with a single. Casey Frawley followed with a double that drove home Holt. Bo Greenwell then banged a single that sent Frawley to third base. After Ross struck out Jeremie Tice, the Pelicans went to the bullpen and inserted Ryan Kelly. Facing Kelly, Adam Abraham popped a ball into foul territory on the third base side. Chirino and the Pelicans left-fielder Hoying closed on the ball and nearly collided as Hoying made the catch in foul territory. The disruption was enough for Frawley to tag and score from third to tie the game at three. On the play, Greenwell advanced to second when catcher Zach Zaneski fumbled the throw home and was charged with an error. Abreu would then send a seeing eye single over the second base bag to drive Greenwell home and give Kinston a 4-3 lead. Greenwell and Abreu each had two hits for Kinston.
All-Star Preston Guilmet finished things off in the top of the ninth for his fourteenth save in as many chances. Sturdevant (4-2) got the win in relief for Kinston. Ross (7-2) was saddled with the loss.
The home series continues with a Fireworks Saturday night at 6:30 pm at Historic Grainger Stadium. Cleveland’s 2010 first round draft pick and Carolina League All-Star Drew Pomeranz will take the hill for Kinston.
Captains fall 3-2 in 10
Michael Gonzales’ RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning gave Beloit a 3-2 walk off victory of Lake County on Friday night. It was the third straight loss for the Captains, who are now 0-5 in extra innings this season.
Lake County took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Anthony Gallas was hit by a pitch and Alex Monsalve doubled to center to put runners on second and third. Gallas scored on a passed ball. Ronny Rodriguez doubled to right field to score Monsalve.
Snapper Jairo Perez hit his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning; the solo shot cut the lead in half at 2-1.
Beloit tied the game up at two in the seventh inning. Daniel Santana singled to right field scoring Lance Ray from second.
Blayne Weller (4-2) picked up the win working two scoreless innings, no hits, walking two and striking out three. Rob Bryson worked just two thirds, allowing a run, on one hit, walking one and hitting a batter, with a strike out.
Lake County and Beloit continue there weekend set on Saturday night from Pohlman Field at 8:00PM. The Captains will start RHP Cole Cook (2-6) against LHP Pat Dean (0-0) for the Snappers.
