The Clippers won for the 13th time in the last 14 games with a 4-3 victory over Toledo on Tuesday night.
It would be the Mud Hens getting on the board first in the top of the third. Brandon Inge, the Detroit Tigers third baseman who was on a rehab stint with Toledo, blasted a two-out solo home run into the left field bleachers to give Toledo an early 1-0 lead.
The Mud Hens would then tack on another run with some help from poor Clippers defense. After a one out Cale Lorg walk, Omir Santos hit a grounder to Jason Kipnis. Kipnis, wanting to turn a double play, flipped it to second, but the ball ended up in left field as Clippers shortstop Jason Donald was not in a position to receive the ball. The error by Kipnis allowed Lorg to score all the way from 1st to make it 2-0 in favor of Toledo.
Needing to make up some ground on the scoreboard, Jered Head answered the bell with one out in the bottom of the 5th. Head clubbed a solo shot to deep left center field to cut the Mud Hen lead in half to make it a close 2-1 contest.
The very next inning, the Clippers were looking for the lead. The first two batters, Ezequiel Carrera and Jason Donald, singled to start the bottom of the sixth. After Jason Kipnis reached on a fielder's choice, Shelley Duncan gave the Clippers the advantage with a clutch three-run home run to left center field, making it 4-2 in favor of Columbus.
As if one home run was not enough for Brandon Inge, the Mud Hens third baseman,hit his second solo home run in the top of the eighth. It snuck just right inside the left field foul pole and it was back to a one run affair, a 4-3 lead for the Clippers.
The lead ended up standing up as a victory when Josh Judy came on in the ninth and got his 11th save of the season.
Zach McAlister (8-2) was impressive as he went seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit while striking out six and walking three. Duane Below (6-4) was victimized by the long ball as all four of the runs he gave up came via a home run.
The Clippers will pack their bags and head to Toledo to once again tangle with the Mud Hens. Clippers right hander Corey Kluber (4-4) will face Mud Hens starter Thad Weber (3-6) in a night contest with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
Aeros Rally Late, Down B-Mets In Game One Of Series
The Akron Aeros scored six runs in the top of eighth inning and two in the top of the ninth to come from behind and win game one of a three-game series against the Binghamton Mets 10-8 Tuesday at NYSEG Stadium.
Right-hander Chen-Chang Lee recorded the win for the Aeros pitching 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits, walking one and striking out three. Righty Cory Burns got out of a trouble in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn the save pitching a third of an inning.
Right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner got the start for the Aeros lasting 5.1 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking one and striking out three.
Right-hander Ricky Brooks suffered the loss for the B-Mets pitching a third of an inning, giving up three earned runs on two hits and walking two.
The Aeros (34-37) got on the board in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Matt McBride and Beau Mills rapped back-to-back doubles to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
The B-Mets (23-45) answered in the bottom of the second inning. Allan Dykstra led off with a walk. Salomon Manriquez moved Dykstra to third with a double. Raul Reyes followed with a three-run home run to give Binghamton a 3-1 lead. Later in the frame, Jordanny Valdespin singled home Jonathan Malo to make it 4-1.
Akron got a run back in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Kyle Bellows walked and Karexon Sanchez singled. Juan Apodaca followed with an RBI single scoring Bellows and cutting the B-Mets lead to 4-2.
The B-Mets added two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-2 lead.
The Aeros rallied in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs and a runner on first, Sanchez worked a walk. Apodaca followed with an RBI double to make it 6-3. Binghamton made a pitching change replacing Brandon Sage with Brooks. Following the change, Tim Fedroff walked to load the bases. Brooks walked Jordan Henry with the bases full to force home a run and make it 6-4. McBride doubled home two runs to tie the game 6-6. Mills followed hitting a two-RBI double to left field to give the Aeros an 8-6 lead.
Akron added two runs in the top of the ninth inning on a Bellows RBI single and a Fedroff RBI groundout to make it 10-6.
Binghamton scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Burns got out of a jam to give the Aeros the win.
The Aeros and B-Mets continue their three-game series Wednesday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Matt Packer, who is 2-7 with a 5.65 ERA in 2011. He will face fellow southpaw Robert Carson, who is 2-7 with a 4.19 ERA this season. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
Timely Hitting Lifts Scrappers Over Muckdogs
Mahoning Valley used a pair of two-out hits and a trio of shutout pitching performances to beat the Batavia Muckdogs, 2-0, at Eastwood Field.
Kevin Fontanez doubled in Todd Hankins with two outs in the fifth inning to give the Scrappers a 1-0 lead. Bryson Myles singled in Tony Wolters with two outs in the eighth to give Mahoning Valley a two-run lead. The scoring came after Batavia designated hitter Mike O’Neill was ruled to have left third base early on an apparent sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning, preventing a run from scoring and ending the inning.
Danny Jimenez and two relievers combined to shut out the Muckdogs. Jimenez threw 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball to start the game. Cody Allen followed and retired all 11 batters he faced, striking out six. He earned the win to improve to 1-0. Bryce Stowell threw the final two innings, allowing one hit and one walk and striking out three batters. He picked up his first save of the season.
Mahoning Valley and Batavia conclude their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm at Eastwood Field.

What is Stowell doing pitching for MV?
He's been going through some personal stuff this year.
I know that from this website. But, he had been at Lake County and had made 2 appearances, giving up 0 runs in 4 innings.
What I meant was, why was he demoted to MV from Lake County when he was by all appearances performing well? All I can think of is that he was sent to MV during the Midwest League All-Star break so that he could continue to pitch.
Oh yeah it is exactly as you said. With lake county off until Friday and kinston also off he simply is in MV to get work in. I'd expect once LC or Kinston get back to playing that he goes therethiz weekend or possibly even Akron.
