2011 Draft Signings: Myles and more are signed

Cody Elliott
The Indians have officially signed three players from the 2011 Draft. Outfielder Bryson Myles (6th round, Stephen F. Austin), right-handed pitcher Grant Sides (12th round, Samford U), and outfielder Cody Elliott(21st round, Ball St) have come to terms and are the first three players from the 2011 draft class to sign. They will all be assigned to Mahoning Valley.

As noted in the previous update 17th round pick right-handed pitcher Kevin Brady will be a summer follow by the Indians while they monitor his performance in the Cape Cod League. This article seems to imply that if the Indians like what they see and offer him a fair contract that he could sign.

30th round pick shortstop John Polonius had an interesting draft discussion with the Chicago Cubs. Apparently the Cubs contacted him just before the draft saying they would like to take him in the 8th to 12th round of the draft and would offer him $60K or two years of college tuition to sign. A representative for Polonius said he would only accept $150K to sign. When Polonius’ group requested more money, the Cubs took him off their draft board. He is currently playing summer ball in the Coastal Plains League and has said he will not sign and will attend West Virginia next year where he has a baseball scholarship that will pay for most of his tuition.

It doesn’t look like 31st round pick right-handed pitcher Michael Roth will sign, at least from this article. His focus has been on South Carolina’s postseason, so he let a lot of calls from scouts on draft day go right to voice mail, which may have explained why he slipped some in the draft. He also plans to spend the summer in Spain and it looks like he is committed to getting his degree prior to signing. He also has said he would not sign unless he gets an overwhelming offer.

36th round pick left-handed pitcher Abel Guerrero is eager to sign
. I have had a chance to talk to him recently as well and he said the same thing, and I would not be surprised if he is one of the first signings announced this week. He is currently pitching summer ball in the Northwoods League.
