2011 Indians 50th Round Pick: C Tyler Baker

Photo: Topeka Capital Journal
In the 50th round of the 2011 Draft the Indians select catcher Tyler Baker out of Shawnee Heights High School (KS).

Bats: Left, Throws: Right, Height: 5'9", Weight: 165, Date of Birth: 03/08/1993

Note: Baker is listed as a catcher, but was the state pitcher of the year in his division in Kansas. He led his Shawnee Heights team to an undefeated state title.

Jeff Ellis: The Indians end the draft with Tyler Baker, a prep catcher from Kansas. He is committed to Wichita State, and he was the first player to commit for them this year so it seems a strong commitment. He played high school baseball with last year’s high pick Jordan Cooper, another former Wichita player. It seems appropriate that they end with an up the middle player and with a good athlete who played shortstop and catcher in high school. As a junior he hit .472 with 9 home runs which led the Topeka area schools. He was also all state that year. He is a player who could play just about anywhere, but will be a very hard sign and I think he will be going to Wichita State this fall. He does have connections to the Tribe and could be a re-draft candidate in the future.

I don't know, that size may make him consider it...

He's an interesting, scrappy kid. Imagine...he plays infield, outfield, catcher, and can pitch...and pitch well enough to be called the pitcher of the year in his state playoff tournament.

Kid's got talent, but will never have major league size...

That could make him an easy sign...

Since Joe Morgan was 5'8", I never count someone out because of their size. It's the talent, commitment and desire which ultimately determines if a kid makes it or not.
