Alex Monsalve in the top of the 13th inning lifted the Captains to a 10-8 lead with a 2-run shot to left; it was his third of the season. Lake County defeated Fort Wayne 12-8 on Sunday afternoon, completing the sweep and winning their fourth in a row.
The Captains loaded the bases in the top of the first inning. Jesus Aguilar drove in his 45th run of the season with a sacrifice fly to left center to go up 1-0.
Captain starter Kyle Blair, ran into some trouble in the second inning. Blair hit Cole Tyrell with a pitch and walked Oscar Garcia and BJ Guinn to load the bases. Chris Bisson ripped a 3-run triple to right field. Bisson scored on sacrifice fly by Rico Noel to make it 4-1 TinCaps.
Fort Wayne made it 6-1 in the fourth inning. Noel singled up the middle scoring Bisson who reached on a leadoff single. Luis Domoromo singled to centerfield driving in Noel.
Lake County took advantage a few TinCap errors in the sixth. Monsalve reached on an error by the third baseman. Argenis Martinez singled to put runners on first and second. A passed ball charged to Cole Tyrell moved the runners up. Ronny Rodriguez hit a ground ball to short that went under the glove of BJ Guinn into center scoring both runners, and cutting the lead in half at 6-3.
The Captains Jesus Aguilar doubled to start off the eighth inning, extending his hit streak to eight straight games. Martinez reached on throwing error. Jordan Casas drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to leftfield to make it 6-4. Martinez scored from third on a wild pitch by closer Adam Dominick putting Lake County within a run at 6-5.
In the ninth, Alex Monsalve doubled to left center to start the inning off. Jesus Aguilar crushed a 2-run shot, his 13th of the season to left tying the game up at seven. Martinez singled to right and moved to second on a fielding error by Rymer Liriano in right field. Jordan Casas grounded to second, the ball rolled through the glove of the second baseman Chris Bisson into right, scoring Martinez and giving the Captains an 8-7 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, the TinCaps picked up back to back doubles by Oscar Garcia and BJ Guinn tying the up at nine.
Dale Dickerson (1-1) picked up his first win of the season pitching two scoreless innings allowing three hits, striking out two. Jeff Ibarra (2-3) took the loss allowing three runs, two earned on just one hit, walking one and striking out two.
Lake County and Fort Wayne will pack up and head to Eastlake, Ohio for a three game set at Classic Park beginning at 7:00PM on Monday night. The Captains will start RHP Mike Goodnight (5-3) against LHP Noah Mull (1-1) for the TinCaps.
Braves rally to beat Clippers 8-5
A five-run top of the ninth powered Gwinnett past the Clippers, 8-5.
The Clippers entered the top of the ninth with a 5-3 lead and Josh Judy on the hill to try to slam the door.
With two outs and the bases loaded, third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall misplayed a ground ball, which allowed the Braves to score and bring them within one run.
The next batter, Chris Carter, took a Judy pitch over the right field wall to empty the bases and give the Braves a three-run lead.
Both Chad Huffman and Jerad Head came to the plate with two on in the bottom of the ninth, but they both struck out.
Though all five runs were unearned, Judy (2-2) is still charged with a blown save. He had successfully converted 11 straight saves coming into the game.
The Clippers were poised to grab their second win of the series on the strength of a Head grand slam in the third, which put the Clippers up 5-2.
After winning six in a row, the Clippers have dropped their last two. They will look for a series split Monday at 7:05 PM. Corey Kluber (4-4, 6.35) will take the hill for Columbus and will square off against Yohan Flande (2-4, 4.45).
10-Run first propels Aeros
The Akron Aeros brought 14 men to the plate and scored a season-high 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning as they completed the sweep of a three-game series against the Reading Phillies winning 12-2 Sunday at Canal Park.
The 10-run frame was the first time the Aeros scored 10 plus runs in an inning since July 29, 2005 when they scored 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning at Binghamton.
Right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner earned the win for Akron tossing seven innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out six while walking just two.
Right-hander B.J. Rosenberg lasted just a third of an inning and suffered the loss for Reading giving up seven earned runs on four hits, walking two and striking out none.
Jordan Henry led off the first inning with a walk and Tim Fedroff reached on an infield single. Beau Mills was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Matt McBride followed with an RBI single to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead. Fedroff scored when Juan Diaz grounded into a force out to make it 2-0. Kyle Bellows was next as he singled home Mills to give Akron a 3-0 lead. Nick Weglarz worked a walk to load the bases. Karexon Sanchez followed with a two-RBI single chasing Rosenberg and giving the Aeros a 5-0 lead. Righty Jordan Ellis replaced Rosenberg and began his day by walking Donnie Webb to reload the bases. With the bases full, Henry rapped a two-RBI single to center field to make it 7-0. The Aeros added three more runs in the frame to take a 10-0 lead.
Webb drove in runs in the bottom of the second and fourth innings to give Akron a 12-0 lead.
The R-Phils (36-39) scored twice in the top of the fifth inning, but drew no closer as Akron went on to the series sweep.
The Aeros (37-39) will look for their fourth win in a row on Monday as they welcome the Bowie Baysox to town for the first of a three-game series. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Matt Packer, who is 2-8 with a 5.60 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Tim Bascom, who is 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Kinston Wins Sixth Straight Game
Kinston won their season best sixth straight game with a 5-4 win over Potomac Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. The K-Tribe (4-0, 42-31) took advantage of four Potomac errors on the afternoon. Kinston is off to their best start in a half since the 2004 season.
Reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week T.J. House ran into trouble in the top of the second inning as a walk, hit batter and an error set the table for a Justino Cuevas two RBI double. Potomac left the top of the second with a 3-0 lead.
The K-Tribe came right back in the bottom of the second inning, as Abner Abreu started things with a single. Chase Burnette then reached on an error. Doug Pickens and Delvi Cid delivered back-to-back run scoring singles to cut the Potomac advantage to one. Casey Frawley tied the game later in the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Pickens from third base.
J.R. Higley would give Potomac a 4-3 lead with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning. T.J. House would leave the game with one out in fifth inning, giving up two hits and four runs (three earned). He walked four and struck out six.
Potomac’s defense would again let them down in the fifth inning, when Frawley reached on an error on a pop-up to shallow center field. After Anthony Gallas flew out, Adam Abraham reached on an error by the shortstop. Abreu then followed with a shot to the right field gap, scoring both Frawley and Abraham to give Kinston a 5-4 lead. Abreu went 2-for-3 for Kinston. Potomac’s starter Cameron Selik (2-5) was the tough luck loser giving up five runs (four unearned) in five innings.
Kinston’s bullpen sealed the deal, as Kyle Landis and Rob Bryson combined for 4 2/3 innings of two hit ball. Landis (3-0) picked up the win, Bryson took his first save of the season.
The short three game homestand continues Monday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Game time 6:30 pm, gates open at 5:30 pm.
Big First Inning Propels Scrappers to Victory
Mahoning Valley scored six runs in the first inning en route to an 8-1 victory over the State College Spikes. The Scrappers sent 10 men to the plate in the inning, hitting four doubles and chasing State College starter Mike Jefferson. Jake Lowery, Kevin Fontanez, Todd Hankins and KC Serna drove in the runs.
Mahoning Valley added a run in the second and another in the eighth. Starter Mason Radeke threw five innings of one-run ball to pick up the win in his first start of the season. He is 1-0.
The Scrappers finished with eight runs on 12 hits, one shy of their season high in each category. The series between the Scrappers and the Spikes continues Monday night at 7:05 pm.
