2011 Indians 48th Round Pick: RHP Blaine O'Brien

Photo: Keystone Athletics
In the 48th round of the 2011 Draft the Indians select right-handed pitcher Blaine O'Brien out of Keystone College (MA).

Bats: Right, Throws: Right, Height: 6'7", Weight: 180, Date of Birth: 10/16/1989

Note: O'Brien was originally supposed to go to Georgia, but ended up at Middle Georgia instead. He was also supposed to go to Maryland after that, but ended up at Keystone. He went 8-2 with a 3.77 ERA. In 74 IP, he gave up 61 H, 31 ER, 44 BB and struck out 66. Obvious control issues: 11 WP and 11 HBP. But very tall at 6'7".

Jeff Ellis: Blaine O’Brien is a big righty from Keystone College. He was drafted three years ago by the Phillies in the 34th round, so he has dropped 14 spots since then. He was originally committed to the University of Georgia, and was a pretty high recruit coming out of high school. He is 6’7”, but not a hard thrower sitting in the low 90’s. He throws a two seam and four seam fastball, and has a circle changeup along with a slider with good bite. He played all three sports in high school, and continuing with today's theme was the quarterback on the football team. I am not sure what happened, but instead of Georgia he ended up at Middle Georgia then transferred to Division III Keystone State. His stats show control problems, maybe too much bite on his pitches, but still for this late in the draft O’Brien is a player worth the risk. He was once very highly thought of and still has a solid pitch mix. Bouncing through the Juco and then Division III ranks means he has never had top of the line coaching. If he can be straightened out I think there is a lot to like here. I get the feeling he will be a signable player as few Division III players turn down a chance to take major league money.  A name to keep your eyes on if he does end up signing.

He throws a 2 seaman? Something on your mind Jeff?

Hey take it easy on my boy Jeff....dude cranked out all those reports in record time so grammar/spelling went by the wayside while he thought of 2 sea men...errr...I mean 2-seamers.;-) I actually just went through all the scouting reports and corrected any errors.

Hahaha I know that dude worked his ass off, just a little lighthearted ribbing.
