Around the Farm: Instructs & AZPL 10/10, AFL 10/11

Carlos Moncrief
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in Instructional League, advanced Instructional League (AZPL), the Arizona Fall League (AFL), and the Caribbean Leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

Here are the game reports for both the Instructional League and AZPL games played on Monday. Also, the recap for the Indians’ players who played in the AFL on Tuesday is included.

Arizona Fall League: October 11
  • Jesus Aguilar (DH): 1-for-4, R, HR, RBI, 2 K. You can't stop Aguilar, you can only hope to contain him. His third homer already in the AFL and he is putting a nice capper on a very good season.
  • Roberto Perez (C): 0-for-4. Perez is now just 1-for-14 at the plate in four games so far, though the one hit was a homer.
  • T.J. McFarland (SP): 3.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 3 K. McFarland has now made two starts and was his typical self pitching to contact and getting groundball outs with four groundball outs to just one fly out.
Instructional League Game #12: October 10 vs. Reds
  • Francisco Lindor (DH): 0-for-3, BB, K. Beyond the numbers the most important thing in Instructs is getting Lindor valued playing experience which he missed because he signed so late.
  • Juan Herrera (2B): 1-for-4. Not much is known about Herrera at this point other than he was the Indians’ top hitters in the DSL this year (.297, 1 HR, 20 RBI, .775 OPS).
  • Alex Monsalve (C): 1-for-2. Now that Cannon is back in action in the AZPL it looks like Monsalve will go back to regular action in Instructs.
  • Alex Lavisky (C): 0-for-2. The numbers have not been there for Lavisky this season or in Instructs, but he has worked hard with coaches to continue to work on his approach.
  • Jordan Smith (3B): 0-for-3, 2 K. Tough day but Smith is still betting on-base at a .450 clip this fall.
  • Leonardo Castillo (1B): 0-for-3, K. Castillo is a not a high profile prospect, but he has logged a lot of time this year at rookie level Arizona and Instructs and appears destined for Lake County next year.
  • Ronny Rodriguez (SS): 0-for-2, 2 K. Ronny-Rod is 7-for-22 at the plate with 7 strikeouts this fall.
  • LeVon Washington (DH): 0-for-1. Washington was a late game substitution.
  • Bryson Myles (CF): 1-for-3, R, 2B. Myles is having a very good fall in all facets of the game showing power, speed, and defense.
  • Dorssys Paulino (DH): 2-for-3, R, HR, RBI. Paulino was the Indians’ big prize from Latin America this past July. I can’t wait to see him for the first time today.
  • Anthony Santander (RF): 1-for-3, R, 3B, K. Another high profile Latin signing this summer who I will get a chance to see for the first time today.
  • Hunter Jones (LF): 1-for-3, RBI. Jones is a full time outfielder now and has been getting a lot more playing time of late in Instructs now.
  • Shawn Morimando (SP): 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 1 K. Morimando’s third appearance in Instructs and the performance has been up and down: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 5 K.
  • Luis Lugo (RP): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R/ER, 5 BB, 0 K. Lugo was strong in his first two appearances but was a mess in this one with 5 walks in his 1.1 innings of work (41 pitches).
  • Luis DeJesus (RP): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. DeJesus has allowed 1 run in 5.1 innings of work and has built off a strong campaign at rookie level Arizona (3.33 ERA, 46.0 IP, 45 K).
  • Jeffry Cleto (RP): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Cleto pitched this season in the DSL (1.65 ERA, 65.1 IP, 37 K) and has pitched well in his stateside debut in Instructs.
  • Cody Anderson (RP): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. A clean and efficient nine-pitch inning for Mr. Anderson.
Parallel League Game #13: October 10 vs. Reds
  • Robel Garcia (2B): 1-for-4, R. Garcia makes his AZPL debut and continues to have a strong fall showing.
  • Jake Lowery (1B): 2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI. Lowery gets his first taste of the AZPL and the results continue to be the same with the power and on-base ability.
  • Tyler Cannon (C): 0-for-1, K. Cannon is back from a minor injury and still working out at catcher.
  • Carlos Moncrief (LF): 2-for-4, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI. Moncrief is hitting .302 with 1 HR, 7 RBI and 6 walks in the AZPL.
  • Cody Allen (SP): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K. That’s two scoreless outings for Allen in the AZPL covering 5.0 innings.
  • J.D. Reichenbach (RP): 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Reichenbach needed 20 pitches to get through his one inning of work.
  • Dale Dickerson (RP): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Dickerson continues to be a workhorse this fall with his 7th appearance, which leads all pitchers.

hey Tony -

Just a big thank you for all the updates! Great info every day.
Looks like Aguilar might be a late bloomer... one that the Tribe desperately needs. Curious to see his 2012 development.
Enjoy the Twitter updates on Rondon, some others. Unfortunately, with no threads, some of the other Tweets make no sense.
Have a great time in AZ.

Thanks Chris. I am 100% with you in that Aguilar will be a lot of fun to see his development next year. In fact, come to think of it, there are a ton of guys who will be very interesting to see how they develop next year. I don't remember there being so many question marks and hopefuls in a long time such as what they will have going into next year. Could be a great thing....or a bad thing. All the more reason why next year is damn well intriguing!
