Around the Farm: October 17

T.J. McFarland
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

Here is the rundown of what Indians players in fall and winter ball did yesterday:

Arizona Fall League
  • Jesus Aguilar (1B): 1-for-4, K. Aguilar has cooled off some, but in 9 games is still hitting .364 with a .727 SLG. He has recorded at least one hit in 7 of his 9 games this fall.
  • Chad Huffman (LF): 0-for-4, BB, K. Huffman is in the AFL to get some work in at first base, but with Aguilar there right now until the end of the month he will get some time in the outfield.
  • Roberto Perez (C): 1-for-3, 2 R, BB, K. Perez came into the game in a nasty 0-for-15 streak after homering in the 6th inning of his first AFL game on Oct 5th, and snapped it with a hit and actually reached base in 2 of his 4 plate appearances in the game.
  • T.J. McFarland (SP): 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 0 HR. Okay outing by McFarland as while he limited the damage with 1 run in 3.0 innings he also allowed 5 baserunners and threw just 27 of his 51 pitches for strikes (53%). Still a groundball machine with 5 groundouts to 1 flyout.
  • Preston Guilmet (RP): 1.1 IP 3 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 1 K, 0 HR. They often say that a good or bad performance in the AFL doesn’t really change anything….but I think when a pitcher with question marks struggles or succeeds in the AFL something can be taken from that.
  • Cory Burns (RP): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 HR. Burns has not skipped a beat in his 4 outings so far in the AFL where in 5.0 innings he has allowed 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and has 2 strikeouts.
Dominican Winter League
  • Juan Diaz (SS, Toros del Este): 0-for-4. Diaz started and made his winter league debut in the Dominican Republic and take an 0-fer in his first game.
