Around the Farm: Instructs & AZPL 10/3, AFL 10/4

Jesus Aguilar
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in Instructional League, advanced Instructional League (AZPL), the Arizona Fall League (AFL), and the Caribbean Leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

Here are the game reports for the Fall Instructional League and Arizona Parallel League (AZPL) teams played on Monday. Also, the AFL started play yesterday so here is the first recap of what Indians players did there.

Arizona Fall League Game #1: October 4
  • Jesus Aguilar (1B): 2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI. The Arizona Fall League kicked off yesterday, and Aguilar got off to a rocking start. If he can have a very good showing in the AFL it will certainly increase his stock as there are still several naysayers out there on him.
Instructional League Game #8: October 3 vs. Mariners
  • LeVon Washington (DH): 1-for-3, 2 K. Washington is putting the wraps on what was a disappointing 2011, but hopefully he is setting the foundation for an exciting 2012.
  • Ronny Rodriguez (DH): 0-for-1. With several new players starting to get time in Instructs, this may be one of R-Rod’s final games.
  • Robel Garcia (2B): 1-for-2, K. I have really liked what Garcia showed this year in the AZL and now in Instructs. Possible sleeper prospect.
  • Juan Herrera (2B): 1-for-2, 2B. Who? Never heard of this guy…likely a new signing. I’ll know more about him very soon.
  • Jake Lowery (DH): 1-for-3, BB, K. Ho hum. A hit and walk for Lowery. What else is new.
  • Leonardo Castillo (1B): 0-for-4, K. Castillo played all last season at third base in the DSL, but this season has played some third base and has mostly been at first base.
  • Jordan Smith (3B): 1-for-3, BB, 2 E. Smith makes his fall debut, and picks up right where he left off at Mahoning Valley by reaching base twice in four plate appearances.
  • Bryson Myles (CF): 1-for-1, SB. Myles shows his double threat ability at the plate with his hitting-speed combo.
  • Luigi Rodriguez (CF): 0-for-2, 2 K. Two at bats, two strikeouts. L-Rod moves on to fight another day.
  • Hunter Jones (LF): 0-for-4, K. We have a Hunter Jones signing. He has been in and out of the lineup all year during the season and in Instructs as well.
  • Anthony Santander (RF): 0-for-3, 2 K. Santander debuts and was one of the top signings the Indians made this July in Latin America.
  • Francisco Lindor (SS): 0-for-2. There is lots of shortstop talent in Instructs, though Lindor has gotten the lion’s share of the playing time.
  • Dorssys Paulino (SS): 0-for-1, E. Instructional League debut by the Indians’ big time Latin American signing this past July.
  • Eric Haase (C): 0-for-2, K, E. Haase is getting his first true game experience as a professional, though has played sparingly so far in Instructs.
  • Alex Lavisky (C): 0-for-1, K. Lavisky and Haase combine to go 0-for-3 with 2 strikeouts and an error. Ouch.
  • Dillon Howard (SP): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. A 23-pitch near perfect performance for one of the most exciting young pitchers in the Indians’ system.
  • Robbie Aviles (RP): 2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 1 K. Numbers were not pretty, but Aviles is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery.
  • Luis Lugo (RP): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Lugo debuts and needed just 26 pitches in his two perfect innings of work.
  • Cody Anderson (RP): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Anderson makes his debut this fall with a perfect 1-2-3 inning in 11 pitches.
  • Luis DeJesus (RP): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Another 2011 draft pick that makes their first appearance in Instructs.
  • Shawn Morimando (RP): 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 2 K. Morimando’s debuted and showed some rust with a 28-pitch inning allowing four base-runners and two runs.
Parallel League Game #8: October 3 vs. Surprise
  • Kyle Bellows (1B): 1-for-4, R. Bellows has been getting some work in at first base, possibly just for need, but also possibly as an option for him next year.
  • Carlos Moncrief (RF): 2-for-5, R, 2B. Though the strikeouts are still a concern, Moncrief has had a good showing in the AZPL.
  • Alex Monsalve (C): 2-for-5, 3 RBI, K. Monsalve is getting a chance in the AZPL to build on what was a solid season for him. A 2 hit, 3 RBI day is nice to see.
  • Casey Frawley (2B): 0-for-1. We have a Frawley sighting. Looks like he is getting into some game action the final 10 days of Instructs.
  • Danny Salazar (SP): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. One of the most positive developments this fall has been Salazar’s performance. Good to see.
  • Dale Dickerson (RP): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Dickerson with a clean, strong inning of work.
