Around the Farm: June 5

N. Weglarz

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday's performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's game.

Nick Weglarz – RF, Akron: 1-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, K

Welcome back Nick Weglarz! The outfielder has been in extended spring training recovering from a knee injury and was just activated in his old Akron stomping grounds for yesterday's game against Binhamton. The Canadian slugger made his 2011 professional debut and knocked in a pair of runs with a single. One can assume his stay in Akron will only be until he's ready to resume full-time outfield action with Columbus. Weglarz slammed seven home runs for Akron last season before moving up to Columbus to hit six for them. He's been hampered by injuries the past few seasons, but has a chance to find his way up to Cleveland if he can get healthy.

Rob Bryson - RP, Lake County: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

And welcome back Rob Bryson! The reliever made his 2011 debut as well, pitching for Lake County and turning in a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts. Bryson will eventually work his way up to Akron, but is getting his work in with the Captains after recovering from a fractured ankle. Bryson, one of the players received from Milwaukee in the CC Sabathia trade, struck out 80 hitters in just 53 innings last season between Lake County, Kinston, and Akron.
  • Zach McAllister – SP, Columbus: 5 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 5 K: After starting off 7-0, McAllister has now dropped two straight decisions. Earlier in the week against Durham, he put up a quality start, but on Sunday against Louisville, McAllister struggled for the first time this season. It's the most hits and runs he's given up in a game this season and in his past two games has given up three home runs. He gave up just one prior to that.
  • Carlton Smith – RP, Columbus: 2.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K. The unraveling of Carlton Smith continues. Smith has now given up more runs in April and May than he gave up hits in all of April. Through the 15 innings he's pitched in the past two months, he's given up 14 earned runs off 20 hits and 12 walks. He gave up just eight hits and 2 walks in 11+ April innings.
  • Luis Valbuena – SS, Columbus: 1-for-3, R, RBI, BB: Luis Valbuena has upped his hit streak to 13 games with another hit against the Bats. He's now hitting.295 on the season.
  • Luke Carlin – C, Columbus: 1-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB, K: He's hitting just .254 on the season, but Carlin is boasting an on-base percentage of over .400 with two more walks and another hit yesterday.
  • Jerad Head – LF, Columbus: 2-for-4, HR, 4 RBI: Without a hit in his last four games, 16 at-bats, Head had a big game in the losing effort. He collected his seventh home run and knocked in all but one of the Clippers runs.
  • T.J. McFarland – SP, Akron: 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K: McFarland picked up just his second win for Akron this season after putting in his fourth quality start in the last five games.
  • CC Lee – RP, Akron: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K: More strikeouts for CC Lee, who just continues to rack them up. He now has 47 in 33 innings to just seven walks.
  • Cory Burns – RP, Akron: 1 IP, S (14), 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K: Second straight clean appearance for Burns in regards to hits and walks. He now has the second most saves in the Eastern League.
  • Beau Mills – DH, Akron: 2-for-4, R, BB: Mills has been hitting well the past few games. He's gone 7-for-17 his last four games and has scored a run in his past three games.
  • Karexon Sanchez – 2B, Akron: 3-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, SB: A perfect day for Karexon Sanchez, who was on base all four times and scored a pair of runs.
  • Giovanni Soto – SP, Kinston: 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R (5 ER), 3 BB, 4 K: Not one of Soto's best outings of the season, and his second game giving up five runs in three starts. Soto got away with it last time with some great run-support. The four walks he surrendered was the most since April 17th.
  • Tyler Sturdevant – RP, Kinston: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K: Sturdevant with two perfect innings and three more strikeouts to add to his season total. Sturdevant has struck out 36 in 33 innings and is now carrying a 1.91 ERA.
  • Tyler Cannon – 2B, Kinston: 1-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, K: After putting together back-to-back mutli-hit games, Tyler Cannon has put in back-to-back games with a home run. Cannon hit his second for Kinston and fifth overall.
  • Cole Cook – SP, Lake County: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 5 K: Cook took his sixth loss of the season put put in a decent effort as always. However it was the most walks he has surrendered in one game this season.
  • Carlos Moncrief – RF, Lake County: 1-for-3, R, HR, RBI, BB, K: The 6'1, 210 outfielder just keeps knocking them out of the park. Moncrief hit his eighth, which puts him one homer behind team leader Jesus Aguilar. Moncrief's hit was also the lone-run scored by Lake County.
  • Argenis Martinez – 2B, Lake County: 2-for-4, K: One of the Midwest League All-Stars collected a few hits. The right-handed infielder has struggled, and the hits were just his fifth and sixth hits in his past 32 at-bats.
