Around the Farm: August 28

Jerad Head

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday's performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's game.

Jerad Head - LF, Cleveland: 1-for-3.

The stat line for Head is hardly noteworthy, but what is very noteworthy is that he got the much deserved call up to Cleveland yesterday and made his big league debut. He even got the jitters out of his system with an infield single in the second inning. If not for all of the injuries the Indians have suffered of late it is possible the opportunity never would have come for him this year, but when opportunity knocks you have to answer so it will be interesting to see what he does now that he has a chance this final month to show the Tribe brass and coaching staff what he can do. He is an example to each and every minor league player in the Indians organization that it doesn't matter if you were a first round pick, got a big signing bonus, or have been considered a top prospect. If you bust your ass every day working hard in the weight room, stay out of trouble, be a good teammate, and just continue to improve your game....you could get the same chance.
  • Jared Goedert – 3B, Columbus: 1-for-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, K. Some people have given up on him, but he is not dead yet. Quietly having a good year after return from injuries hitting .267/.350/.498 in 80 games.
  • Chad Huffman – RF, Columbus: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 2B. He was the early season favorite to be the first right-handed outfield bat called to Cleveland, but his inconsistency and Jerad Head’s year changed that.
  • Beau Mills – 1B, Columbus: 1-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI. The homer breaks a 7-game hitless streak where he went 0-for-24 during that stretch.
  • Zach McAllister – SP, Columbus: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 9 K, HR. Another strong Triple-A outing for Z-Mac who is 11-3 with a 3.35 ERA this year there. A solid depth starter, but next year he needs to translate that success to the big leagues.
  • Nick Hagadone – RP, Columbus: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR. Looks like he suffered from a little bit of the big league hangover after being sent down hours before the game.
  • Kyle Bellows – 3B, Akron: 1-for-2, K. Didn’t go much with the bat, but continues to be a vacuum at third base. Made a great diving stab to the shortstop hole against the first batter of the game. One of best defenders at the position in all the minors.
  • Jordan Henry – CF, Akron: 2-for-3, 2 R, BB. The left-handed hitting Henry has had a down year, and surprisingly his issues have stemmed from facing right-handed pitching (.234/.342/.254). He has been good against left-handed pitching (.296/.389/.336).
  • Austin Adams – SP, Akron: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 6 K. Aside from four straight two-outs hits in the first innings, Adams dominated. He was only throwing up to 93-94 MPH yesterday, but pitched with confidence and his stuff was very good.
  • Bryce Stowell – RP, Akron: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Showing the same dominating numbers this season as last year with some improved command. True test will be Triple-A.
  • Tyler Holt – CF, Kinston: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 SB. Holt was the firestarter at the top of the lineup as he reached base in four of six plate appearances and helped get into scoring position with two stolen bases.
  • Adam Abraham - 3B, Kinston: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, K. Can’t say it enough how much Abraham has meant to the K-Tribe this year. Having his best pro season and the leader of that team.
  • Jeremie Tice – DH, Kinston: 3-for-6, R, HR, 4 RBI. Tice continues to be an RBI man in the minors, and you have to wonder what he could do in a full season if he could ever stay healthy all year.
  • Clayton Cook – SP, Kinston: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR. One of the most consistent starting pitching prospects in the system. He has Jeanmar Gomez upside to him.
  • Toru Murata – RP, Kinston: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 3 K. Stop the presses! That is the first run Murata has allowed after a 14-game stretch covering 26.0 scoreless innings. Wow.
  • Alex Monsalve – DH, Lake County: 2-for-4, 2B, RBI. The Indians love the ability behind the plate, but he has also shown a little more offensively this year than originally anticipated.
  • Aaron Fields – 1B, Lake County: 3-for-4. The son of the Indians big league hitting coach doesn’t get to play often, but he has made the most of it of late by racking up two multi-hit games in his last three games.
  • Jordan Cooper – SP, Lake County: 6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R/ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR. He has actually been much more effective this year as a reliever (11 G, 1.80 ERA) than a starter (15 G, 5.94 ERA).
  • Kyle Blair – RP, Lake County: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Another good outing out of the pen, and since his return from his knee injury has thrown 14.0 innings and allowed 10 hits, 2 earned runs, 4 walks, and has 6 strikeouts.
  • Jake Lowery – DH, Mahoning Valley: 2-for-3, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K. He may only be hitting .243 on the year but he has a good .374 OBP and has been an RBI machine with 40 in 63 games.
  • Francisco Lindor – SS, Mahoning Valley: 1-for-3, R. The Indians 2011 1st round pick made his pro debut on Sunday and played a scheduled 5 innings before being replaced by Tony Wolters.
  • John Barr – LF, Mahoning Valley: 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI. He has struggled this year as he is hitting just .219/.293/.255, so good to see a multi-hit effort which should help with the confidence.
  • Elvis Araujo – SP, Mahoning Valley: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Nice Mahoning Valley debut for the fast rising lefty who may be one of the most talented pitchers in the entire organization.
  • Jose Ramirez – 2B, Arizona: 3-for-4, R, 2B, RBI. Turns 19-years old next month, and having a very good pro debut this year hitting .326/.353/.453 in 47 games in Arizona.
  • Jorge Martinez – SS, Arizona: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, K. The Indians have shortstops all over the place in the lower levels of their system. It will be very interesting to see what they do with some guys like Martinez next year.
  • Bo Greenwell – RF, Arizona: 1-for-4, RBI, BB, K. His fourth rehab game in Arizona and much “colder” after a blazing stretch where he went 8-for-9 at the plate in his first three rehab outings.
  • Shawn Morimando – RP, Arizona: The 18-year old lefty has been impressive in his first three pro outings going a total of 6.0 innings and allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and 8 strikeouts.

In the case of Jerad Head, I think you meant he is an example that "you [do not have to] stay out of trouble....and you could get the same chance."

Has that whole bar fight deal been hammered out yet? Last I read about a month ago they were still trying to settle on a dollar amount?????
