In front of a packed house of 10,232 at Huntington Park, the Clippers beat the Indianapolis Indians 4-3 on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Beau Mills.
The Indians had a chance to get on the board first when Gorkys Hernandez lined a triple into the right centerfield gap with two outs. Luckily for Columbus, Paulo Espino struck out Pedro Ciriaco to end the inning.
The Clippers would get on the board first in the bottom half of the fourth. Paul Phillips looped a single into right centerfield with one out. Two batters later, Luis Valbuena singled to right to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two out. The Clippers caught a lucky break when Tim Fedroff kept the inning alive with an infield single that ricocheted off of the glove of Indianapolis pitcher Brian Burres. Jared Goedert then took advantage of the RBI opportunity with a bases clearing double off of the right centerfield wall which gave the Clippers a 3-0 lead.
The top of the 6th did not start off well for Clippers lefthander Eric Berger as he walked Eric Fryer and Gorkys Hernandez to begin the frame. Berger would then be picked up by his defense in an unconventional way. Pedro Ciriaco smashed a grounder up the middle that Argenis Reyes made a diving stop on, allowing him to flip onto shortstop Luis Valbuena to get the runner at second base for out #1. Valbuena then threw a strike to third baseman Jared Goedert, who tagged out the lead runner in Eric Fryer for out #2. In summation, Columbus was able to get two outs on the rare 4-6-5 double play. The next batter, Jordy Mercer singled to center field. That was followed by a John Bowker single to right field, which drove in Ciriaco to get the Indians on the board 3-1. Berger was relieved by Zach Putnam, who gave up an RBI single to the first batter he faced in Matt Hague. The RBI base knock by Hague drew Indianapolis closer to Columbus 3-2. The Clippers would lose the lead when Putnam threw a wild pitch that Columbus catcher Paul Phillips could not handle as John Bowker came into score from third, tying the contest at 3-3. Putnam was able to strike out Pedro Alvarez for the final out, but the damage was done by the Indians as the game was back to scratch.
There would be no more scoring until the bottom of the ninth. Jared Goedert led off the inning with a walk. The next batter, Jerad Head, hit a rocket to left center field that ended up bouncing over the wall for a ground rule double, keeping Goedert from scoring the winning run. Nick Johnson would then be walked to set up the force at home plate. Indianapolis brought in right hander Jared Hughes to face the right handed batting Chad Huffman. With still nobody out in the inning, Huffman struck out on a 0-2 check swing that the Huntington Park crowd was not very fond of for the first out of the frame. The next batter, Beau Mills, skied a high fly ball into centerfield that was deep enough for Goedert to score from third, allowing the Clippers to walk-off with victory 4-3. Chen Lee (4-0) picked up the victory for Columbus. Garrett Olsen (4-3) was hit with the loss.
The Clippers will welcome a new opponent to Columbus as they begin a short two game series with Louisville Bats on Sunday night. Zach McAlister (10-3) will start on the mound for Columbus. He will face Louisville left-hander Travis Wood (2-2). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm.
Aeros fall in extras
Right-handed pitcher Cory Burns allowed a Wendell Fairley go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th inning that proved to be the difference as the Akron Aeros lost game three of a four-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2 Saturday at Canal Park.
Burns suffered the loss for Akron pitching an inning and two thirds, walking one and striking out two. Left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland made the start tossing six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walking four and striking out three.
Right-hander Hector Correa recorded the win for Richmond pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Righty Heath Hembree got the last three outs to earn the save.
John Drennen singled home Juan Diaz in the bottom of the first inning to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead.
Akron (67-66) increased their lead to 2-0 on a Michel Hernandez sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning.
A sacrifice fly from Francisco Peguero cut the Aeros lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning. The Flying Squirrels (71-62) tied the game at 2-2 when Chris Dominguez doubled home Charlie Culberson.
Following the Fairley RBI single in the top of the 10th inning, Akron got a runner to third in the bottom of the frame, but could not score as they lost game three.
The Aeros will go for the split of this four-game series with the Flying Squirrels on Sunday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Austin Adams, who is 10-10 with a 3.78 ERA in 2011. He will face left-handed pitcher Clayton Tanner, who is 6-10 with a 4.29 ERA this season. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m.
Kinston series moved to Virginia
The Kinston Indians and Lynchburg Hillcats will play a doubleheader tomorrow night in Virginia starting at 5:05pm. Due to damage caused by Hurricane Irene to Historic Grainger Stadium, the series had to be re-located. Monday is a mutual off day and will now conclude the series between the K-Tribe and Hillcats. Monday's game will start at 7:05pm. Kinston will play at Grainger Stadium Tuesday night against the Fredrick Keys first pitch scheduled at 7:05pm.
Captains shutdown by Hawks 3-0
Mike Bolsinger tossed seven scoreless innings on Saturday night, limiting Lake County to just three hits as South Bend shutout the Captains 3-0.
The Silver Hawks scored two runs in the second inning, the first came following a single by Jhoan Pimental when Chase Burnette could not handle the relay throw from center allowing Matt Helm to score. Pimentel scored from third later in the inning on a wild pitch from Danny Salazar to make it 2-0.
Yazy Arbelo hit his league leading 30th homerun of the season in the third off Kirk Wetmore. The solo shot put South Bend in front 3-0.
Bolsinger (6-6) picked up the win working the seven frames, three hits, no runs, no walks and seven strike outs. Jeremy Erben picked up his sixth save of the season working two perfect innings of relief. Danny Salazar in his Captains return took the loss allowing two runs, one earned in two innings of work, walking one and hitting a batter.
Lake County and South Bend resume the four game series on Sunday afternoon at The Cover at 2:00PM. The Captains will start RHP Jordan Cooper (2-7) against RHP Jeff Shields (8-12) for the Silver Hawks.
Scrappers rally past Jammers for 4-2 win
Tony Wolters and Jake Lowery had run-scoring hits as part of a four-run sixth inning to help the Scrappers erase an early deficit and defeat the Jamestown Jammers, 4-2.
Jamestown took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out single by Brian McConkey. The runs were unearned after Lowery’s passed ball allowed a runner to reach base on a strikeout to start the inning.
The score remained 2-0 until the sixth, when Wolters singled in Aaron Siliga to make it 2-1. The ball got past McConkey in right field, allowing Bryson Myles to score from first base to tie the game. Lowery singled in Wolters, who had advanced to third, to give the Scrappers the lead. Jordan Smith doubled Lowery to third and Alex Lavisky followed with a run-scoring ground out.
Jack Wagoner picked up his first professional win with two innings of perfect relief. He improved to 1-0. The loss went to Jammers starter Jose Urena. He fell to 4-7. Enosil Tejeda put the tying runs on base in the ninth inning, but got a fielder’s choice ground out and a strikeout to end the game. He earned his 11th save of the season.
The Scrappers and Jammers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday night at 5:05 pm.
