The Columbus Clippers came back from a 7-1 deficit on Saturday night to score 10 straight unanswered runs and stun Rochester with an 11-7 win.
After four innings the Clippers were down 7-1 because starter Mitch Talbot struggled to find any consistency. He ended up pitching just 2.0 innings and allowed six runs on six hits, one walk and had one strikeout. Matt Langwell came in relief and got the win after he went three innings and allowed one run on five hits, no walks and had three strikeouts. Chen Lee followed him with two scoreless innings of relief allowing a hit and walk while striking out four, and then Zach Putnam game on and got the save going two scoreless innings allowing a hit, no walks, and had three strikeouts.
The comeback was fueled by a big sixth inning for the Clippers where they struck for six runs. The big blows of the inning was a two-run double by Tim Fedroff and a two-run triple by Chad Huffman. Fedroff finished the night 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk and five RBI, and Jared Goedert went 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI.
The series continues in Rochester on Sunday evening at 6:05 PM. Joe Martinez is scheduled to start for the Clippers.
Aeros late rally falls short in New Hampshire
The Akron Aeros rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning and put runners on first and second in the top of the ninth, but couldn’t overcome a five-run deficit as they lost game two of a three-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5-3 Saturday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Right-handed pitcher Austin Adams suffered the loss for Akron pitching six innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out four.
Right-hander and former Aero Yohan Pino recorded the win for New Hampshire tossing seven scoreless innings, scattering two hits and striking out seven while walking one. Righty Clint Everts got out of a jam in the top of the ninth inning to earn the save.
Anthony Gose got the Fisher Cats (67-52) on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.
It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Kevin Howard singled home Mike McDade to make it 2-0.
Gose rapped an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 3-0.
The Fisher Cats added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 5-0.
The Aeros (62-58) scored three times in the top of the eighth inning. Michel Hernandez and Donnie Webb opened the frame with back-to-back singles and Karexon Sanchez reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Ben Copeland followed with an RBI single scoring Hernandez and cutting the New Hampshire lead to 5-1. Webb scored when Juan Diaz grounded into a force out to make it 5-2. Following a pitching change, Sanchez scored when John Drennen grounded into a force out to cut the deficit to 5-3.
That was as close as Akron would get as they fell to New Hampshire in game two.
The Aeros will look to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Fisher Cats on Sunday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Matt Packer, who is 5-11 with a 4.61 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Joel Carreno, who is 7-9 with a 3.52 ERA this season. First pitch is at 1:35 p.m.
Kinston wins in 13 innings
The Kinston Indians defeated the Salem Red Sox in 13 innings by a score of 9-7 on Saturday Night. Kinston used three hits a walk and a sacrifice fly to score two runs and win the game 9-7. The turning point was a wild pitch committed by Salem relief pitcher T.J. Hose, which put the K-Tribe up 8-7 and then a sac fly by Roberto Perez gave the K-Tribe insurance, and ultimately the win.
The Kinston Indians opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Adam Abraham doubled home Tyler Holt who reached on an error. The 1-0 lead was short lived.
In the bottom half of the inning the Salem Red Sox scored four times. The Red Sox had six straight hits to begin the game including back-to-back homeruns by Bryce Brentz, and Miles Head. The Red Sox plated four runs and led the game 4-1 after one full inning.
Kinston starter Marty Popham didn’t make it out of the third inning. After a double by Brentz and a walk to Hecker Meneses that was it for the Righty. Aaron Holbert went to the bullpen and summoned the newest Kinston Indian Nick Sarianides. Sarianides yielded a sacrifice fly to Shannon Wilkerson making the score 5-1 in favor of the Salem Red Sox.
In the bottom of the forth inning Salem added to their lead. Josue Peley doubled and then Peter Hissey doubled him home. Later in the inning Hiss scampered home himself on an RBI single by Bryce Brentz. The score was 7-1 after four full innings of play.
In the seventh inning the K-Tribe got a little bit closer. Adam Abraham reached on an infield single and then trotted home on the Jeremie Tice 2-run homerun. It was Tice’s 9th homer of the season. The score after seven was 7-3 in favor of Salem.
Meanwhile, Toru Murata entered the game on the mound in the sixth inning with a 13-inning scoreless inning streak. Murata extended his streak by two innings to 15 straight scoreless frames.
The Kinston Indians didn’t go quietly as they tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. Tice walked to start the inning off Salem Reliever Michael Gleason. Jesus Aguilar then singled Tice to second base. With one out Doug Pickens reached on a fielder’s choice that moved Tice to Third. Pickens then took second base on defensive indifference. Roberto Perez then lined a single to left field which scored both Tice and Pickens and made the score 7-5. That sent Gleason to the showers and Will Latimer to the hill. Delvi Cid greeted him with a base hit and Perez stopped at second base. Casey Frawley was sent to the plate to pinch hit for Jordan Casas and Frawley promptly doubled to left field scoring both Perez and Cid. Cid scored all the way from first base. The Indians pushed four runs across the plate in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7.
The losing pitcher was T.J. Hose (0-1) who was making his first Carolina League appearance and was saddled with the loss. The winning pitcher was Kyle Landis who pitched a scoreless two innings and struck out one. The time of the game was 4 hours and 28 minutes.
Kinston and Salem will conclude the four game series on Sunday afternoon. Kinston will look for the series sweep as they send LHP T.J. House (6-10, 4.92) to the rubber. The Sox will look to salvage the series, as Salem will counter with RHP Stolmy Pimentel (2-3, 4.84) to the center of the diamond. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 pm and it will be the 20th and final time the two teams will clash in 2011.
Dragons Sprint to a 2-1 Win Over the Captains
Billy Hamilton scored all the way from first base when Drew Poulk singled and Luigi Rodriguez bobbled the ball in center field and the Dayton Dragons took game one of the series 2-1 in eleven innings on Saturday night.
The Captains scored in the first inning for the second game in a row when Ronny Rodriguez doubled home Luigi Rodriguez and the Captains led 1-0. The Dragons tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Donald Lutz hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Hamilton.
Captains starter Mike Goodnight did not get a decision working five innings allowing one run on one hit, walking a season high five batters and striking out six. Dale Dickerson hurled three scoreless innings allowing three hits, walking one and striking out three. Kyle Petter (2-3) took the loss allowing the unearned run on three hits and striking out four.
Dragons starter Mitch Clarke did not get a decision pitching five innings and allowing one run on seven hits, walking two and striking out two. Brian Pearl came on in the sixth inning and threw three scoreless innings allowing two hits and fanning two. Blaine Howell (2-1) got the win pitching three scoreless, hitless innings walking one and striking out one.
The Captains and Dragons will complete the game that was suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to rain in Eastlake on August 9th at 2 PM on Sunday. The teams will finish the final six and will follow that up with the scheduled game which is now slated for seven innings. The Captains will send RHP Sterling Felix (2-1, 2.20) to the mound in the scheduled game against Dragons starter RHP Kyle Lotzkar (1-1, 5.12).
Scrappers stymied in 2-1 loss to Cyclones
Joseph Colon and two relievers combined to allow two runs on seven hits but the Scrappers bats were silenced in the late innings in a 2-1 loss to the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The Scrappers had just two hits, a one-out single by Jerrud Sabourin in the third inning and an RBI single by Todd Hankins in the fourth. Hankins’ single tied the game at 1-1 after Brooklyn scored a run on a Richard Lucas double in the third. The Cyclones scored the go-ahead run in the sixth off reliever Ramon Cespedes. They had back-to-back singles to start the inning before Cespedes threw a wild pitch, advancing the runners to second and third. Cole Frenzel grounded out to Hankins at second base, plating what turned out to be the winning run.
Brooklyn starter Randy Fontanez and two relievers combined to retire the final 17 Scrappers batters to come to the plate. Reliever Steven Winnick picked up the win to improve to 2-0. Todd Weldon pitched the final three innings for his fourth save of the season. The loss went to Cespedes, who fell to 0-1 this season.
The Scrappers and Cyclones will conclude their three-game series on Sunday night at 5:05 pm.
