Conner Powers hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the Fort Wayne Tin Caps took game one of the four game series from the Lake County Captains 9-4 on Saturday night. The Captains Ronny Rodriguez also delivered two home runs and drove in four.
The Tin Caps jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Powers hit a three run home run. The Captains came right back in the bottom of the inning when Rodriguez answered with a three run homer of his own to tie the game at 3-3.
The Captains took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Rodriguez homered again, his tenth of the year. Powers answered back with a two run home run, his sixth of the year, in the top of the sixth inning and the Tin Caps led 5-4. The Caps put two more runs up on the board in the top of the seventh inning when Cory Spangenberg singled home Chris Bisson and Rico Noel scored on a wild pitch and it was 7-4. The Tin Caps added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning When Bisson walked with the bases loaded and then Rocky Gale scored on a wild pitch and it was 9-4.
Captains starter Felix Sterling got a no decision working five innings and allowing three runs on three hits, walking three and striking out four. Joey Mahalic (0-5) took the loss working two innings and allowing four runs, three earned on four hits, walking one and striking out two. Kyle Petter allowed two runs on one hit, walking three and striking out two in one inning of work. Luis Encarnacion pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Tin Caps starter Todd Privett (3-2) got the win pitching six innings allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits, walking one and striking out four.
The Captains and Tin Caps play game two of the series on Sunday with a special 7 PM game time. The Captains will have LHP J.D. Reichenbach (6-1, 3.35) on the mound to against LHP Mark Hardy (9-9, 2.92).
Buffalo crushes the Clippers, 15-3
Fueled by two explosive innings, the Buffalo Bisons beat the Clippers 15-3, in the opener of a four game set at Huntington Park.
After the first two Bisons hitters grounded out in the sixth, Joe Martinez gave up a home run and two doubles. Chen-Chang Lee came on in relief and gave up two walks and another home run before recording the third out of the inning. The Bisons also scored seven runs in the ninth inning.
Martinez (8-7) went 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. Mark Cohoon (4-8) started for Buffalo and went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
Buffalo scored one in the fourth but the Clippers responded with three runs in the bottom frame. A Beau Mills sac fly and an Argenis Reyes two-run double were the only runs of the game for the home team.
With the loss and a Louisville Bats win, the Clippers' magic number to clinch the International League West remains at three. Sunday's matchup versus Buffalo features starting pitchers Corey Kluber (7-8, 5.61) and Dylan Owen (5-6, 4.69).
Aeros fall to Squirrels 8-6
The Akron Aeros let two one-run leads slip away in the bottom of the third and sixth innings as they lost game two of a three-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-6 Saturday at The Diamond.
Right-handed pitcher Adam Miller allowed the lead to slip away in the sixth and suffered the loss for Akron pitching two thirds of an inning, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits, walking two and striking out one. Right-hander Brett Brach made the start for the Aeros tossing five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out two.
Left-handed pitcher Wilmin Rodriguez recorded the win for Richmond pitching a scoreless inning of relief, allowing two hits and striking out three while walking none. Righty Heath Hembree got the last three outs to earn the save.
Karexon Sanchez broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with a solo home run that gave the Aeros a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived as the Flying Squirrels (67-58) answered in the bottom of the frame. Wendell Fairley tripled to open the inning and scored on a Skyler Stromsmoe single to tie it 1-1. Stromsmoe advanced to second on a throwing error following a strike out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Stromsmoe later scored on a Francisco Peguero sacrifice fly to give Richmond a 2-1 lead.
The Aeros (65-61) answered to tie it in the top of the fourth inning. Kyle Bellows opened with a double and advanced to third on a Raul Padron sacrifice bunt. Michel Hernandez singled him home to tie it 2-2.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Flying Squirrels retook the lead. Stromsmoe singled and Darren Ford reached on a fielder’s choice to open the frame. Following a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners to second and third, Stromsmoe scored on a Peguero sacrifice fly to give the Flying Squirrels a 3-2 lead. Roger Kieschnick followed with a two-run home run that made it 5-2.
Akron answered in the next half inning. Michel Hernandez opened the frame with a walk and advanced to third on back-to-back singles from Sanchez and Jordan Henry. Following a strike out, Hernandez scored when Ben Copeland grounded into a force out to make it 5-3. Chun Chen followed with a three-run home run to give the Aeros a 6-5 lead.
Richmond again rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Johnny Monell and Fairley had back-to-back singles and Stromsmoe walked to load the bases. Following a strikeout, Charlie Culberson singled home Monell to tie the game 6-6. Peguero walked to force home Fairley and give the Flying Squirrels a 7-6 lead. Following a pitching change, Stromsmoe scored on a fielding error as Richmond went on to the win.
The Aeros and Flying Squirrels will play the rubber match of this three-game series on Sunday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Steve Wright, who is 1-2 with a 6.33 ERA in 2011. He will face left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp, who is 9-4 with a 2.14 ERA this season. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m.
Kinston loses to Myrtle Beach 7-2
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (27-28, 66-57) defeated the Kinston Indians (29-25, 67-56) on Saturday night at BB&T Coastal Field. Myrtle Beach used a pair of homeruns en-route to the 7-2 victory.
Myrtle Beach scored first as the second hitter of the game Travis Adair hit a home run to deep right field making the score 1-0 for the Pelicans. They weren’t done in the first as they tacked on a pair off K-Tribe starter Mike Rayl.
Kinston cut the lead to two runs when they platted a run in the top of the second on a Justin Toole base hit.
In the bottom of the third inning Rayl had two outs but then walked the Pelican’s first basemen Andrew Clark. Mike Olt who was just activated last night homered to deep left field making the score 5-1.
Adair doubled to start off the bottom of the fifth inning and eventually came into score on the Olt double down the right field line. It was Olt’s third RBI of the night. This was Olt’s first game back to Carolina League action after he broke his collarbone on June sixth. The score was 6-1 headed to the sixth inning. Myrtle Beach added one run late and took a seven to one lead heading to the ninth.
In the Top of the ninth Kinston added a run when Myrtle Beach reliever Trevor Hurley walked in a run. The Final score was Myrtle Beach 7 and Kinston 2.
The winning pitcher was LHP Chad Bell who improves his record to (3-1). Bell pitched seven innings allowing just six hits, and one walk while striking out eight and allowing just one run. The losing pitcher was Mike Rayl who fell to (1-2). The Pelicans have won two of the first three games of the four game set. Kinston will look for the split tomorrow as they send Clayton Cook (8-8, 3.86) vs. LHP Miguel De Los Santos (5-3,2.83) for Myrtle Beach in the series finale starting at 6:05pm.
Scrappers fall again, lose 5-4
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers picked a bad time to start a losing streak as after a 5-4 loss to Batavia on Saturday night they have now lost three games in a row. The mini losing streak has seen their record drop to 33-27 and into third place a full four games out of first place in the NY-Penn League's Pinckney Division.
Right-handed Will Roberts got the start for the Scrappers and went five solid innings allowed two earned runs on four hits and no walks while striking out two. Lefty Harold Guerrero suffered the loss in relief as he struggled in his one inning of work and allowed two earned runs on three hits, no walks and had a strikeout.
Right-fielder Bryson Myles had a nice game going 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored, and designated hitter Jake Lowery chipped in going 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored.
