The Akron Aeros scored 13 runs on just nine hits as they won the rubber match of a three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs 13-5 Thursday at Hadlock Field.
Left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland recorded the win for Akron pitching 5.1 innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on 11 hits, walking four and striking out three.
Right-handed pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller suffered the loss for Portland lasting five innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits and striking out eight while walking two.
Raul Padron gave the Aeros a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single.
It remained that way until the bottom of the third inning. Ryan Khoury led off with a single and advanced to third when Alex Hassan reached on a Cristo Arnal fielding error. With one out, Will Middlebrooks singled Khoury home to tie the game 1-1. With two outs, Ronald Bermudez rapped an RBI single to give the Sea Dogs (49-68) a 2-1 lead. Oscar Tejeda followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1.
The Aeros (62-56) retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Chun Chen and Raul Padron opened the frame with back-to-back walks and Michel Hernandez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. John Drennen followed with a two-RBI double to tie the game 3-3. Kyle Bellows singled home Hernandez and Drennen to give the Aeros a 5-3 lead.
With the lead trimmed to 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning, Drennen hit a three-run home run to center field to make it 8-4.
Akron scored five more runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on to the win.
The Aeros will travel to New Hampshire to begin a three-game series against the Fisher Cats on Friday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Steve Wright, who is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA in 2011. He will face fellow right-hander Nestor Molina, who makes his first start with the Fisher Cats this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
Indianapolis rolls Clippers 9-1
The Clippers dropped their third straight as the Indianapolis Indians come away with a 9-1 victory, Thursday afternoon.
Indians lefty Brian Burres (4-8) went six innings, allowing one run off of six hits and striking out five. The lone Clippers run came on a Jared Goedert solo homer down the left field line in the fifth inning.
Jeanmar Gomez (10-5) went six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Reliever Zach Putnam allowed two runs, giving up a two-run home run to Jason Jaramillo in the eighth. Josh Judy came in during a non-save situation and allowed four more.
Indianapolis scored three in the fourth off of Gomez. The unearned run was due to an error by third baseman Argenis Reyes.
After two with the Indians, the Clippers now travel to Rochester. It is the beginning of a nine game, eight-day road trip. The Red Wings and Clippers will resume a suspended game at 5:05 PM Friday and will then play seven innings after the completion of the first game.
K-Tribe blasts Sox in opener
The Kinston Indians (24-21, 62-52) thumped the Salem Red Sox (21-25, 52-63) by a score of 11-1 at LewisGale Field in Salem Memorial Ballpark Thursday Night. The K-Tribe used a seven run eighth inning and brilliant pitching by Clayton Cook en-route to the victory. Clayton Cook pitched 6 & 2/3 innings scattering nine hits only walking one batter and striking out four, en-route to a win. The victory brought his record to (8-8).
The Kinston Indians opened the scoring in the top of the forth inning. Salem starting pitcher Drake Britton walked Jeremie Tice to begin the inning and then Jesus Aguilar singled Tice to third base. After a Justin Toole walk, which loaded the bases, Roberto Perez singled right up the middle scoring two runners. The K-Tribe enjoyed a two run lead headed to the fifth inning.
In the fifth, the K-Tribe added on. Tyler Holt walked and then stole his third base of the game, as he took second. A fly ball to center field moved Holt to third base with one out. Britton was knocked from the game after a walk to Adam Abraham. Pete Ruiz entered for Salem and promptly walked Tice. With Aguilar at the plate, a ball pitched out of Ruiz’s hand and skipped past the catcher for a wild pitch. Alert base running by Tyler Holt allowed him scamper home to score another run, giving the K-Tribe a three run lead.
In the bottom half of the fifth the Salem Red Sox got on the board. Shannon Wilkerson lead off with a single and then Josue Peley hit into a fielder’s choice. Derrick Gibson walked, and Peter Hissey singled home Peley cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when Kinston added on. Back-to-back doubles by Jesus Aguilar and Jeremie Tice plated another run and extended the K-Tribe lead to 4-1.
In the eighth Kinston put the game out of reach. Kinston’s first four men reached in the inning, they all came around to score. The big hits were a 2 run single by Jordan Casas and a bases clearing double by Adam Abraham. The K-Tribe pushed four runs across the board and there was still nobody out. Pete Ruiz was chased from the game and Will Latimer entered the game. Latimer game a single to Tice and then a double to Augilar, which scored Adam Abraham and advanced Tice to third base. The score was 9-0. Justin Toole reached on an error and that plated two more runs making the score 11-1. The tenth man up to bat in the inning was Roberto Perez who grounded into the 6-4-3 double play. In the inning seven runs came across home plate and Kinston enjoyed a double-digit lead.
Drake Britton got the loss and saw his record fall to (1-12); Clayton Cook earned the win and improved to (8-8). The Red Sox and Indians will resume the four game series Friday night at 7:05pm in Salem, Virginia.
Loons Too Much for the Captains
Zach Lee threw six strong innings and Chris Jacobs drove in two runs as the Great Lakes Loons defeated the Lake County Captains 4-3 on Thursday night.
The Loons scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning when Leon Landry doubled and went to third on a passed ball. He would score on a fielding error. Three batters later, Jon Garcia drove in Steve Domecus and the Loons led 2-0. The Captains evened it up in the bottom of the second inning when LeVon Washington hit an inside-the park home run that scored Giovanny Urshela to tie the game at 2-2.
Chris Jacobs led off the top of the fourth inning with his ninth homerun of the year and the Loons led 3-2. The Loons added a run in the top of the sixth inning when Jacobs doubled home Michael Pericht to make it 4-2. The Captains cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Shin-Soo Choo grounded out allowing Nick Bartolone to score.
Captains starter Kirk Wetmore (3-2) took the loss working five innings allowing three runs, one earned on four hits, walking one and striking out four. Kyle Blair allowed a run in two innings of work in his first appearance back from the disabled list. Luis Encarnacion worked the 1.2 scoreless innings and Kyle Petter recoded the final out of the ninth inning.
Loons Starter Zach Lee (8-3) pitched six innings allowing two runs three hits, walking one and striking out six. Rick Anton pitched two innings allowing a run on two hits while striking out three. Scott McGough picked up his fifth save pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
The Captains and Loons wrap up the season series on Friday when the Captains send RHP Jordan Cooper 2-5, 4.82) to the mound to oppose RHP Garrett Gould (11-5, 2.48).
