Indianapolis rallies past Clippers
Indianapolis rallied to beat the Clippers 3-2 on a walk-off two out two-run single by Eric Fryer.
The Clippers would get the bats going in the top of fourth. Chad Huffman led off the inning with a double to left-centerfield. That was followed by a Nick Johnson single which put runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out. After a Paul Phillips lineout to rightfield, Argenis Reyes played a little small ball as he helped Columbus get on the board first with an RBI squeeze bunt, giving the Clippers an early 1-0 lead.
Columbus looked to increase the lead in the top of the sixth. Travis Buck walked to start off the frame. That was followed by a Chad Huffman single to center. After Indianapolis made a pitching change, Nick Johnson came to bat, looking to take advantage of the RBI opportunity. Unfortunately, Johnson grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. The inning would end with a Paul Phillips groundout to third and the Clippers wasted a golden opportunity to lengthen their 1-0 lead over the Indians.

The Clippers would get some offensive firepower from a very unlikely source in the top half of the 7th. The first batter of the inning, Argenis Reyes, had no home runs on the season coming into tonight's game. That changed with one swing of the bat as Reyes went deep to right field for his first home run of the season. Reyes's solo shot doubled the Clippers lead to 2-0 at that point.
Things became a little closer in the bottom half of the 8th. Eric Fryer singled with one out. The next batter,Miles Durham, beat out an infield single. Gorkys Hernandez then came to bat for the Indians and got them on the scoreboard with an RBI single left field, drawing Indianapolis closer to Columbus 2-1. Martinez was pulled from the game, giving way to Clippers righthanded reliever C.C. Lee. Lee got Pedro Ciriaco to pop out to Paul Phillips on the infield for out # 2. He would get the final out of the inning on a swinging strikeout by Jordy Mercer.
After a quick top of the ninth for Columbus, Nick Hagadone came on to close out the game for the Clippers. The lead-off hitter John Bowker hit a grounder that ate up first baseman Nick Johnson, allowing Bowker to reach a fielding error. The next batter, Matt Hague, hit a grounder to third base. Jared Goedert was only able to get the runner at second for the first out of the inning. Pedro Alvarez then hit a rocket that was handled by Clippers second baseman Luis Valbuena for the second out of the frame. Jeff Clement then came to bat and found a way to get a bloop double down the left field line, putting the tying and winning run in scoring position with two out. Eric Fryer then came to the plate, lining a single down the left field line, scoring both runners and allowing Indianapolis to walk off with the victory 3-2. Aaron Heilman (1-0) got the victory for Indianapolis. Nick Hagadone (4-3) was hit with the loss.
The Clippers and the Indians will lock horns once again, only this time the venue will be Huntington Park in downtown Columbus. Corey Kluber (7-9) will get the start on the mound for the Clippers . The starting pitcher for Indianapolis is TBD. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
Aeros late rally fizzles in loss to Richmond
The Akron Aeros scored one run in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings and put runners on first and second in the ninth with two outs, but couldn’t overcome a Richmond three-run sixth inning as they lost game one of a four-game series against the Flying Squirrels 4-3 Thursday at Canal Park.
With an Akron loss and a Bowie loss, the Aeros (66-65) remain five and half games back of the Western Division Wild Card spot. Akron is now eight games back of first place Harrisburg with 11 games left to play.

Left-handed pitcher Chuck Lofgren recorded the win against his former team tossing five innings, giving up one earned run on three hits, walking four and striking out four. Right-hander Heath Hembree got the last four outs to earn the save for the Flying Squirrels.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Francisco Peguero scored on a Wes Hodges sacrifice fly to give Richmond a 1-0 lead.
The Aeros answered in the bottom of the frame when Donnie Webb grounded into a force out that scored Kyle Bellows to tie the game 1-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Flying Squirrels (70-61) retook the lead. Francisco Peguero reached on a bunt single to open the frame. Following a strike out, Roger Kieschnick reached when Karexon Sanchez committed a throwing error trying to cut down the lead runner. Following a walk to load the bases, Johnny Monell doubled home Peguero and Kieschnick to give Richmond a 3-1 lead. They added a run on a Juan Perez RBI sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
Akron scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Ben Copeland RBI ground out and one in the eighth on a Karexon Sanchez RBI single, but drew no closer as Richmond took the opener.
The Aeros and Flying Squirrels will continue their four-game series on Friday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Steve Wright, who is 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 2011. He will face left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp, who is 10-4 with a 2.02 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Kinston drops out of first with loss
Kinston again fell victim to a suddenly hot Keys offense in a 7-2 finale loss in Frederick, MD.
Trailing 1-0 after one, Orioles top prospect Manny Machado added to the K-Tribe hardship with a three run homer to left in the third.
Kinston starter Mike Rayl ran in to more trouble in the fifth inning. Rayl pitched to just four men in the inning, departing after allowing a free pass to Tyler Townsend to load the bases with no one out. Rayl fell to 1-3 with the loss, he allowed six earned runs. Kinston’s starter only gets credit for four innings, striking out three men and walking two.
All of Kinston’s offense came via the long ball. Adam Abraham homered to put the Indians on the scoreboard first with a solo blast in the third. Abraham’s 14th home run was his first since July 9th. Tyler Cannon mashed a towering homer to left with two outs in the sixth, his sixth blast of the year.
The K-Tribe kicks off it’s final home stand of the year Friday night against Lynchburg. First pitch at Grainger Stadium is set for 6:30 pm.
Scrappers fall to Doubledays in series finale
The Scrappers scored a run in the bottom of the first inning but were held scoreless the rest of the way and lost to the Auburn Doubledays, 4-1.
Jordan Smith singled in Tony Wolters with two outs in the first to make it 1-0, the only run the Scrappers scored in the game.
Auburn was scoreless until the fifth, when Hendry Jimenez hit a two-run home run to put the Doubledays ahead, 2-1. The home run, his second of the series, came after starter Will Roberts made a throwing error that allowed Justin Miller to reach first base. Roberts picked up the loss to fall to 1-2. Miller hit a solo home run off Drew Rucinski with two outs in the seventh
inning and the Doubledays added a run in the top of the ninth off Ramon Cespedes.
Nathan Karns started for Auburn and allowed one run in six innings of work. He picked up the win to improve to 3-2. Richie Mirowski pitched the next two innings and Manuel Rivera pitched a perfect ninth to earn his second save of the season.
