The winning streak was extended to eight and Columbus completed a perfect home stand with a 6-4 win over the Chiefs to complete the sweep over Syracuse.
It was Syracuse that got on the board first. With two outs in the top of the first, Chris Marrero knocked in Steve Lombardozzi with an RBI double, giving the Chiefs an early 1-0 lead.
The lead would not last long for Syracuse. In the bottom of the 1st, Cord Phelps tied the ball game at 1-1 with a solo shot to deep right center field, his 11th long ball of the season.
The Chiefs would reclaim the lead in the top of the third when Chris Marrero crushed a two-out, two-run tater into the left field bleachers, giving the Chiefs a 3-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, Travis Buck hit a long single off the top of the right field wall to begin the frame. After a Chad Huffman strikeout, Beau Mills walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. The next batter, Paul Phillips, singled up the middle driving in Buck to make it 3-2 Syracuse. Luckily for Columbus, Mills, who was heading full steam to third, was able to avoid the tag by Chiefs third baseman Matt Antonelli . After an Aregnis Reyes strikeout, Tim Fedroff walked to load the bases with two out. Unfortunately, Columbus left them loaded as Cord Phelps grounded into a force out to end the inning.
The Clippers would use some two out magic when Chad Huffman belted a two out, two-run shot over the left center field wall to give Columbus a 4-3 lead.
Syracuse would come back to tie the contest in the top of the 7th. Matt Antonelli singled to center field with two outs to drive home Corey Brown and help Syracuse knot the game up at 4-4.
Columbus looked to regain the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jerad Head singled with one out. Travis Buck was then intentionally walked after Head advanced to second on a wild pitch. That set the stage for Chad Huffman, who stroked a double down the right field line. The extra base hit drove in both runners, enabling Columbus to get back the lead 6-4.
The Chiefs tried one last rally by putting runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs, but Josh Judy shut the door as he picked up his 17th save on the season. Mitch Talbot (1-1) picked up the win in relief for Columbus. Ryan Tatusko (3-2) was hit with the loss.
The Clippers will take their act on the road as they start a short two game series in Louisville to take on the Bats. David Huff (8-3) will get the start for Columbus. He will face Louisville right hander Scott Carroll (6-7). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
Aeros erupt for 10 runs in win
The Akron Aeros banged out 13 hits and scored 10 runs to win the rubber match of a three-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats 10-2 Sunday at Canal Park.
Right-handed pitcher Austin Adams recorded the win for Akron tossing 6.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out five while walking one.
Right-hander Bobby Lanigan suffered the loss for New Britain (56-58) lasting five innings, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out two.
The Aeros (60-55) jumped in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a Michel Hernandez RBI single.
Akron added to their lead the next inning. Kyle Bellows and Nick Weglarz rapped back-to-back singles to open the frame. John Drennen tripled them home to make it 3-0. Karexon Sanchez followed with an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Drennen and increasing the lead to 4-0.
The teams traded single runs in the fourth inning before Akron erupted for two runs in bottom of the fifth inning and three more in the sixth as they went on to the win.
The Aeros are off on Monday and will begin a six-game road trip on Tuesday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Matt Packer, who is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Charlie Haeger, who is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA this season. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
Kinston splits double-header
Kinston got a series win with a doubleheader split over Salem, Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium.
Game two featured a dramatic comeback, as Adam Abraham once again played the role of hero. With Kinston trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Justin Toole started the inning with a single. With one out, Tyler Cannon walked. With two-outs Jordan Casas walked to load the bases. Abraham then hit a 3-2 pitch into right field to drive in Toole and Cannon, giving Kinston a 2-1 lead.
Preston Guilmet finished things off with his 29th save of the season. Kyle Landis (7-0) got the win.
Salem starting pitcher Pete Ruiz was shaky. Ruiz walked five batters over the first two innings, but Kinston could not capatilize, stranding four men on base. ruiz lasted just 2 1/3 nnings. walking six, but not giving up a hit. Francisco Jimenez started for Kinston and got in and out of trouble through his three innings of works. Jimenez did not give up a run on three hits and three walks. He struck out five.
Salem broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. Derrik Gibson put down a perfect bunt to lead off with a single. Peter Hissy followed by getting hit by a pitch and Miles Head drove him in with a single.
In game one, Salem got to Kinston starter Brett Brach early. Salem batted around in the first inning, scoring four runs on four hits and two errors. Brachwalked two in the opening Frame. The New Jersey native would settle down until the fifth inning, when three straight walks led to another Salem run. Brach exited the game after 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on five hits. Brach walked five and struck out five. It was just the third time this season that Brach(6-9) gave up more than three earned runs in a start.
Kinston got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, when Adam Abraham led off with a single and scored on a Tyler Cannon single later in the inning. Kinston hit into three double plays on the day. Adam Abraham went 3-for-3, with three singles in game one. Salem starter Anthony Ranaudo was good enough, giving up five hits and walking four. Kinston's Toru Murata was fantastic from the bullpen, perfect in his 2 1/3 innings of work. Murata struck out four in his work from the K-Tribe pen.
Kinston loads the bus for a seven-game roadtrip, starting Monday at Lynchburg. Marty Popham gets the start for Kinston, game time 7:05.
Rain and Dragons Stop Captains 4-1
A couple thunderous swings from Dayton and then some rain slowed Lake County on Sunday night as the Captains fell 4-1 in a shortened ball game. Jaren Matthews and Ronald Torreyes hit solo homeruns for the Dragons.
Lake County cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the fifth inning, when Aaron Fields doubled in Ronny Rodriguez from first.
Dayton scored a pair of runs in the top of seventh inning, to increase the lead to 4-1.
Tanner Robles (4-8) picked up the win going six innings allowing a run on just one hit, walking two and striking out three. Jordan Cooper (2-5) another tough loss going a career high seven innings allowing four runs on seven hits, no walks and three strike outs.
Lake County and Dayton will continue the four game set on Monday night at 7PM and Cleveland Indians outfield Shin-Soo Choo will be making a rehab appearance. The Captains will start RHP Mike Goodnight (5-10) against LHP Mitch Clarke (2-1) for the Dragons.
Scrappers lose key game to Auburn
With just four weeks left in the regular season, Mahoning Valley and Auburn went into last night's contest tied for first place at 29-20. Auburn made a statement winning 7-0 in the short two game series. The loss drops Mahoning Valley to 29-21 and a game back of Auburn in the Pinckney Division.
Lefty starter Harold Guerrero suffered the loss as he worked just 3.2 innings and allowed six runs on five hits and five runs while striking out three. Will Krasne was solid in relief with 4.1 innings of work and allowed one run on four hits, a walk, and had a strikeout.
Offensively the Scrappers were shutout and held to seven hits. Centerfielder Cody Elliott and shortstop Tony Wolters each went 2-for-4, and Wolters also had a stolen base.
