Scrappers split doubleheader

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers split their doubleheader with Batavia on Monday night losing game one 3-2 but then coming back and winning the nightcap 11-3.

Cody Anderson got the start in game one and allowed one run, three hits and a walk in three innings of work. Will Krasne suffered the loss as he allowed a run in extra innings on a walk and hit.

In his second pro game second baseman Zach MacPhee went 2-for-4 with a double and right fielder Jordan Smith went 1-for-2 with two walks to pace the offense.

In game two Danny Jimenez got the start and he went six solid innings allowing two runs on six hits and two walks along with two strikeouts.

Center fielder Cody Elliott had a big game going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Shortstop KC Serna chipped in going 1-for-3 with three RBI, and right fielder Bryson Myles went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a walk.

With the split, the Scrappers stand at 34-28 on the season and in third place and 5.0 games out of first place in the NY-Penn League's Pinckney Division.

Clippers fall short 6-4

The frustration for Columbus continued as they dropped their fourth straight, 6-4 to Buffalo, in front of a large Dime-a-Dog night crowd at Huntington Park.

It would be Buffalo that would get on the board first in the top of the second. Mike Nickeas reached safely on a fielding error Clippers first baseman Beau Mills. The next batter, Paul Reyes, doubled to center field to drive home Nickeas and give Buffalo an early 1-0 lead. After a Fernando Perez walk, Jordany Valdespin doubled to right field, scoring Reyes and extending the Buffalo lead to 2-0. Luckily for Columbus, Joshua Satin grounded out to third to end the inning.

The Clippers would get a run of their own in the bottom of the 2nd when Jared Goedert homered off of the Columbus Dispatch scoreboard, drawing the Clippers closer to the Bisons 2-1.

There would be more offense for Columbus in the bottom of the third. Argenis Reyes began the inning with a single to right field. The next batter, Tim Fedroff, drove a pitch off the left center field wall. Reyes, in motion during the pitch, was able to easily score from 1st and tied the game 2-2. After Fedroff advanced to third on a Cord Phelps fly ball to center field, Travis Buck laced a single past third for an RBI single, giving the Clippers 3-2 advantage.

Two out magic would be the theme for the Buffalo bats in the top of fourth. Jordany Valdespin singled on a line drive that was just got over the glove of Columbus second baseman Cord Phelps, driving in Luis Hernandez and tying the contest at 3-3. After the Valdespin RBI single, Joshua Satin walked to load the bases. The very next batter, Zach Lutz, gave the lead back to the Bisons on a two-run RBI single through the left side, helping Buffalo reclaim the lead 5-3. Gomez was able to avoid further damage by getting Valentino Pascucci to fly out to right field for the final out of the frame.

Needing another rally, the Clippers went to work starting in the bottom of the fifth. Cord Phelps led off the frame with a towering solo shot, his 13th, into the right field porch, drawing Columbus within a run 5-4. After a Travis Buck pop out to shortstop, Jerad Head launched a drive that just eluded the glove of Bisons centerfielder Jesus Feliciano and bounced off of the centerfield wall. Head was able to scamper all the way to third for his first triple ever at Huntington Park. Unfortunately for Columbus, the tying run in the guise of Head was stranded at third base as Jared Goedert popped out to second to end the scoring threat.

The Bisons would up their lead to two runs in the top of the 6th in a quick fashion. Fernando Perez singled with one out. Perez then stole second. The batter, Jordany Valdespin, hit a deep fly-ball to center that was caught by Tim Fedroff. Perez tagged up at second and raced to third. With the help of a slight hesitation by Cord Phelps who cut off the throw from the outfield, Perez was able to motor on and put it into over drive as he rushed home safely to make it a two run lead for Buffalo 6-4.

The Clippers tried to rally once again, having runners on 1st and 3rd with one out in the 6th. Tim Fedroff grounded into a double play to kill the momentum of that inning. Columbus had another chance in the bottom of the 8th. Nick Johnson walked to begin the frame. That was followed by a Jared Goedert single up the middle. After a pitching change by Buffalo, Beau Mills laid down a sacrifice bunt down the third base line to move the runners up 90 feet, but they be stranded at second and third as Luke Carlin and Argenis Reyes struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Clippers would mount one more comeback. Tim Fedroff led off the frame with a walk. After a Cord Phelps strikeout looking, Travis Buck laced a single to right field, putting the tying runs on base with one out. Jerad Head struck out swinging, leaving it up to Nick Johnson to deliver for Columbus. Unfortunately for the Clippers, Johnson lined out to left field to end the game.

Miguel Batista (4-2) picked up the win for Buffalo. Jeanmar Gomez dropped to 10-7 with the loss. Dale Thayer picked up his 18th save of the season.

Buffalo and Columbus will wrap up its four game series between one another tomorrow night at Huntington Park. Clippers right-hander Paolo Espino will start for Columbus. He will face Buffalo left-hander Pat Misch (7-8). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.

Right-handed pitcher Oliver Drake recorded the win for Bowie lasting five innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, walking three and striking out two.

The Baysox (70-57) jumped in front in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Brandon Waring doubled and advanced to third on a ground out. Following a Pedro Florimon walk, Ronnie Welty rapped a two-RBI double to center field giving Bowie a 2-0 lead.

The Aeros lone run came in the top of the fourth inning when John Drennen scored on a Raul Padron ground out to cut the Bowie lead in half at 2-1. The run was unearned.

The Baysox answered with back-to-back two out RBI singles from Florimon and Welty in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Bowie scored four more times in the bottom of the seventh and once in the eighth as they went on to the win.

The Aeros and Baysox will continue their three-game series on Tuesday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Austin Adams, who is 9-10 with a 3.99 ERA in 2011. He will face fellow right-hander Bobby Bundy, who is 1-2 with a 9.90 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

K-Tribe gets shut out

Kinston Indians were shutout in a 2-0 loss Monday night at Frederick’s Harry Grove Stadium.

Francisco Jimenez engaged in a pitchers due, opposed by the surprising Jake Petit with both players carrying scoreless innings deep in to the series opening affair.

Jimenez was the first to give up a hit, Michael Flacco and Kipp Schutz singled and doubled with one out in the inning. With two on, Jimenez induced a pop fly to Delvi Cid who fired a throw home to double off Flacco and end the inning.

The K-Tribe finally singled for the first time in the fifth inning. Justin Toole knocked Kinston’s first hit with one out, a one bagger up the middle. The next man, Jordan Cassas pushed Toole to second with a single of his own. Both Toole and Cassas were stranded as Petit retired the next two he faced.

Petit departed after six innings of shutout baseball having only given up three hits. The Frederick left hander struck out four and walked one.

With one out in the seventh, Jimenez saw his luck run out. Brian Ward hit a double to the left center gap before a pop fly allowed him to third. Ward stood at second with Justin Dalles batting. Dalles blasted a pop to deep right center. Tyler Holt nearly collided with right fielder Delvi Cid at full speed and let the ball fall. Having to wait with one out, Ward only advanced one base. Officially that play was scored a double. With the infield in Dale Mollenhauer singled home the first run. Trey Haley came on and put down the only two batters he saw but fired a wild pitch with two outs to allow the second run to score. Both scores were charged to Jimenez.

Jimenez went six and one third innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits. In the losing effort, Jimenez walked three and struck out four.

Keys manger Orlando Gomez picked up his 148th victory with Frederick, a franchise record.

The series continues with game two set for a 7:00 pm first pitch. Marty Popham is set to get the start for the Indians.
