Game Recaps 8/9: Rough night for Indians affiliates

Clippers streak ends at nine

The Clippers fell 5-2 to Louisville on Tuesday night at Slugger Field, splitting the brief two-game series.

With the loss, the Clippers fall to 74-43 on the season, but maintained their 13.5 game division lead due to an Indianapolis loss.

Louisville got on the board first, plating two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning with two sacrifice flies off of Clippers starter Joe Martinez. The Bats scored another pair in the 4th inning again on 2 sac flies for a 4-0 lead that the Clippers would not threaten.

The only Columbus scoring occurred on Luis Valbuena's 15th home run of the season, a 2-run shot in the top of the 6th that cut the lead in half. Louisville right fielder Jeremy Hermida drilled a solo shot in the bottom of the 6th to cap the scoring.

Nick Hagadone tossed 2 scoreless innings of relief and had a little help from Tim Fedroff, who robbed Bats catcher Corky Miller with a sprinting catch at the wall in dead center field.

The Clippers are back at it on Wednesday, entertaining the Indianapolis Indians at Huntington Park at 7:05pm. Cory Kluber will pitch for Columbus against Indy's Rudy Owens.

Aeros muster just three hits, fall to Sea Dogs 9-2

The Akron Aeros scored just two runs on three hits as they lost game one of a three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs 9-2 Tuesday at Hadlock Field.

Left-handed pitcher Matt Packer suffered the loss for Akron pitching 5.1 innings, giving up six earned runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out four.

Right-handed pitcher Craig Haeger recorded the win for Portland tossing seven innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits and striking out nine while walking two.

The Aeros (60-56) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Juan Diaz RBI sacrifice fly.

The Sea Dogs (49-66) answered in the bottom of the frame. Packer struck out Ryan Khoury to open the inning, but he reached on a wild pitch. Khoury advanced to third on an Alex Hassan double. Mark Wagner followed with a two-RBI triple as the Sea Dogs erased a one-run deficit and took a 2-1 lead. Wagner scored on a Will Middlebrooks RBI single to make it 3-1.

Akron scored again in the top of the second inning when Nick Weglarz came home on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.

Matt Spring got the run back for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single.

Portland padded their lead scoring five more times as they went on to the win.

The Aeros and Sea Dogs will continue their three-game series on Wednesday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Paolo Espino, who is 5-0 with a 2.61 ERA in 2011. He will face fellow right-hander Brock Huntzinger, who is 5-9 with a 6.63 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7 p.m.

Moran flirts with no-no in K-Tribe loss

The Lynchburg Hillcats (19-25, 49-65) defeated the Kinston Indians (22-21, 60-52) 9-0 on Tuesday night in Lynchburg Virginia.

The story of the game was starting pitching. The Hillcats starter Gary Moran had a no- hitter bid broken up with two outs in the seventh inning. The single by Jeremie Tice was the first Kinston hit. Moran allowed just three base runners in the ball game. Jeremie Tice also reached on an error, and was eliminated on a fielder’s choice hit by Tyler Cannon. Those were the only base runners of the night against Moran.

On the other side K-Tribe starter T.J. House had a rough night. House pitched five full innings allowing nine hits; nine runs scored all of them earned. House walked five and stuck out just one Hillcat. House previously had a record of 3-0 with an ERA of 1.59 against Lynchburg.

Lynchburg scored early and often against Kinston starter. The Hillcats plated three runs in the first inning Todd Cunningham walked leading off the game for Lynchburg. Cunningham promptly stole second base, and then a single by Gosselin scored Cunningham. The double machine Joey Terdoslavich hit his Carolina League leading 46th double of the season, which scored Gosselin all the way from first. Joe Leonard then singled home Terdoslavich making the score Lynchburg three and Kinston zero.

The Hillcats were not done as in the bottom of the second inning with Cunningham on second base Gosselin unloaded a homerun to left-center field. The homer was Gosselin’s sixth of the season. After the first two innings the K-Tribe was in a 5-0 hole.

A leadoff walk hurt Kinston in the fourth. After drawing the free pass, L.V. Ware pushed to third on a single and a pop fly. An infield ground out off the bat of Phil Gosselin brought Ware home for the sixth Hillcats run.

The highlight of the night for Kinston came on defense in the fifth. Hillcats base runner Joe Leonard was aggressive, attempting to score from first on a Geraldo Rodriguez double and Tyler Cannon gunned him down on a relay throw from Delvi Cid. Cannon threw a seed to catcher Roberto Perez for the put out. The inning went on, and with two runners on L.V. Ware hit a homerun to deep left field. That put the game out of reach at 9-0 Hillcats.

The winning pitcher was Gary Moran who was making his second start in the Carolina League. Moran improved his record to (1-0) and kept his ERA at 0.00. Moran’s final line was eight innings pitched allowing just one base hit (Tice); he fanned eight six looking and did not walk a hitter. On the game the K-Tribe just managed two hits all night as Jordan Casas laced a single to right field off Lynchburg’s reliever Matt Crim in the ninth inning. The losing pitcher was T.J. Jones who falls to (3-1) against Lynchburg on the season, and (6-10) overall.

The Kinston Indians will try to salvage the final game of the series Wednesday Night at 7:05pm in Lynchburg, Virginia.
