Donnie Webb broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly as the Akron Aeros avoided a three-game series sweep at the hands of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats winning the finale 2-1 Sunday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Left-handed pitcher Matt Packer recorded the win for the Aeros tossing eight innings, allowing one earned run on three hits, and striking out seven while walking one. Right-handed pitcher Tyler Sturdevant got the last three outs to earn the save.
Left-hander Frank Gailey allowed the Webb sacrifice fly and suffered the loss for the Fisher Cats (67-53) pitching two innings of relief, scattering two hits, walking one and striking out none.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Raul Padron scored on a force out to give the Aeros (63-58) a 1-0 lead.
It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Moises Sierra hit a solo home run to left field to tie the game 1-1.
Webb drove in Kyle Bellows with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to give the Aeros the win.
The Aeros are off on Monday and will begin a three-game home series against the Harrisburg Senators on Tuesday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Paolo Espino, who is 6-0 with a 2.44 ERA in 2011. He will face fellow right-hander Shairon Martis, who is 7-4 with a 3.05 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Clippers rained out
The Columbus Clippers and Rochester Red Wings were rained out on Sunday. They will make up the game as part of a doubleheader on Monday starting at 5:05 PM.
Kinston falls in finale 10-3
The Salem Red Sox (22-27, 53-65) defeated the Kinston Indians (26-22, 64-52) by a score of 10-3. The Red Sox used a four run bottom of the sixth inning that put the game out of reach. Miles Head had a big RBI base hit in the sixth for the Red Sox and Shannon Wilkerson also got an RBI single, which gave Salem all the momentum going into the seventh inning.
The Salem Red Sox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning off Kinston starting pitcher T.J. House. Derrik Gibson waked to start the game, and then Heiker Meneses tripled home Gibson and it was 1-0. Jorge Padron hit a grounder to first baseman Jesus Aguilar, but that scored Meneses from third base making it a 2-0 ballgame.
In the bottom half of the second inning Salem added one more run. With two outs Josue Peley walked and then David Mailman doubled him home. The score was 3-0 after two complete innings.
It remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. The K-Tribe brought in Trey Haley from the bullpen. Haley walked the bases loaded with no outs. Padron hit a ground ball to shortstop Tyler Cannon, and Cannon could only make one out at second base, a run came into score and their was still runners on the corners Miles Head then got a base hit that scored both runners as a fielding error allowed the second run to score all the way from first base and allowed Head to get into second base. That was the third run that came into score making it a 6-0 game and then Shannon Wilkerson singled home Head to make the score 7-0 after six complete innings of play.
Tom Ebert entered the game in the top of the seventh for Salem. Jordan Casas for Kinston greeted him with a sharp base hit to center field. Adam Abraham was hit by the pitch and then Jeremie Tice singled to load the bases. Casey Frawley singled home two runs making the score 7-2 Salem.
Salem added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Peley singled to center and advanced to second on a fly ball. Derrik Gibson singled him home and that made the score 8-2 after seven full innings in Salem.
In the home half of the eighth inning Salem tacked on two runs. Brice Brentz singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Shannon Wilkerson reached on an error, setting up Alex Valdez. Valdez promptly lined a base hit to left field scoring Brentz and advancing Wilkerson to third base. Peley then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field which chased home Wilkerson from third Making the score 10-2.
Casey Frawley homered in the ninth-inning; it was his eleventh of the season. That closed the scoring, as the final was 10-3.
The winning pitcher was Stolmy Pimentel who improved his record to (3-3). T.J. House was given the loss and he sees his record fall to (6-11).
Kinston will return home for a quick three game set against the Potomac Nationals. All three games Monday-Wednesday will start at 6:30pm. No Pitching Match-up has been announced at this point.
Dragons Take Two From the Captains
The Dayton Dragons pitching staff continues to befuddle Lake County Captains hitters as the Dragons defeated the Captains 7-1 on Sunday. In the six games this half, the Captains have only been able to manage five runs, four earned against Dragons pitching.
The Dragons go out to an early lead when they scored four times in the bottom of the first inning with three of the runs coming home on a three run home run by Juan Duran, his 14th homer of the year. The Dragons added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI singles by Jefry Sierra and Billy Hamilton with the third run scoring on an error and the Dragons led 7-0. The Captains lone run came in the top of the seventh and final inning on a ground out by Aaron Fields that scored LeVon Washington.
Captains starter Felix Sterling (2-3) took the loss working four innings allowing seven runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three. Kyle Blair threw two scoreless innings of relief walking two.
Dragons starter Kyle Lotzkar (2-1) got the win pitching five scoreless innings allowing only one hit, walking two and striking out four. Drew Hayes closed out the game hurling the final two innings and allowing a run on two hits.
Prior to this game, the game that was suspended in Eastlake on August 9 was picked up in the top of the fourth inning with the Dragons leading 2-0. The Dragons would go on to win 9-2. Sterling who started the game in Eastlake took the loss for the Captains and Tanner Robles (5-8) got the win for the Dragons.
The Captains and Dragons will wrap up the season series on Monday at 7 PM on Sunday with the Captains sending LHP J.D. Riechenbach (6-1, 3.59) to the hill to oppose Dragons RHP Daniel Corcino (9-6, 3.41).
Scrappers rained out
Sunday night’s game against the Brooklyn Cyclones was rained out. No makeup date has been scheduled.
