Corey Kluber struck out a season high 11 batters and didn't allow a hit in his 6.2 innings to lead the Clippers to a 5-2 victory over the Patwucket Red Sox.
Kluber (7-8) also walked five and was pulled from the game in the seventh after throwing 113 pitches. Chen-Chang Lee retired the final batter of the seventh but allowed the Paw Sox's first hit in the eighth - a single to Luis Exposito.
The Clippers jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Patwucket got back into it. In the first, Jerad Head delivered an RBI single for an early one run lead. One inning later, three consecutive Clippers singled to load the bases for Luis Valbuena. He promptly unloaded them with a grand slam over the right field wall.
Zach Putnam came on in the ninth and retired the first two Paw Sox hitters. He then loaded the bases and gave up a single to Exposito, which made it a three run game.
Josh Judy came in to face the tying run in Jose Iglesias, and forced him to ground out to end the game. It marks Judy's twentieth save of the season.
After the Clippers took the opening game of the series, the two teams will play three more. The first pitch for Wednesday's game is at 7:05 PM.

The Kinston Indians fell by a final score of 6-3 in 11 innings to the Potomac Nationals on Tuesday Night. The Nationals scored the go ahead run in the eleventh with two outs in the inning. It seems Putnam's been very average lately. I know he was supposed to be next in the pecking order, but I don't see how you don't place Hagadone and CC Lee ahead of him. I'd like to see either of those guys in the Indians bullpen.
Lee is not an option this year. Doesnt need to be rostered until after next season and there are very good bullpen alternatives in Judy, Hagadone and Putnam plus there is not a significant need for bullpen help....so no need to add him right now.
Nice to see Kluber starting to show something. Hopefully this is him turning a corner and not just a blip. Any idea what the Columbus rotation next year might look like? Barnes, Gomez, McAllister, Kluber, Huff/Carrasco? Not much room for Martinez/Espino or any current Aeros pitcher. Nice to see a plethora of #4/#5 starter options though.
Yeah, everyone is worried about losing White/Pomeranz, but the Indians really have four good starters in the bigs with Jimenez, Masterson, Tomlin and Carmona....and then a nice group to choose from for the 5th spot with Huff, Carrasco, Gomez and McAllister...and then some nice depth with Kluber, Barnes, Packer, McFarland, etc. If Jimenez, Masterson and Carmona pitch to their capabilities, the loss of White and Pomeranz may not be as severe...and with a guy like Kluber there is some good depth there as a backend starter or potentially a bullpen guy.
