Kinston wins long, wild one

The Kinston Indians worked from behind and leaned on the bullpen to turn the tide in Myrtle Beach for an 8-7 Sunday victory.

A 5-1 advantage came crumbling down in the third inning as the Pelicans scored five runs on four hits, taking advantage of two walks to take the lead and chase Kinston starter Clayton Cook. Chris Jones came on to close the inning out and retired the only two men he faced in the frame.

Tyler Holt and Delvi Cid both reached to start the fourth and came home on a balk and a throwing error from Pelicans short stop Jimmy Swift. The lead did not last long.

Jared Hoying blasted his second of three doubles to start the home half of the fourth inning. One batter out in to the inning came home on Jared Prince’s single. It tied the contest at 7 runs apiece.

With Toru Murata in the midst of a gem relief appearance Jesus Aguilar gave Kinston the lead for good with his third blast of the series. Aguilar launched his fourth Carolina League home run to left field in Majestic fashion.

Murata worked two and two thirds innings to grasp his second win of the season. Murata’s active scoreless streak is now at 22 and two thirds inning, Kinston’s longest of the season dating to May 15th. Preston Guilmet added four outs for his league best 33rd save.

The win secured a series split with the Pelicans and kept the K-Tribe half a game up in the Southern Divisions second half. At three hours and 40 minutes long, Sunday’s contest was the longest road game for the Indians this season.

Four games in Frederick Maryland start Monday at 7:00 pm.

Bisons thump Clippers 10-2

The home stand has not been kind to the Clippers thus far, as they dropped another one to Buffalo, 10-2.

Corey Kluber (7-9) went five innings, giving up six earned runs off of five hits. After jumping on Kluber, the Bisons padded their lead against the Clippers bullpen. Zach Putnam gave up two earned runs in two innings.

Dylan Owen (6-6) gave up one run in seven innings for Buffalo, and also struck out six.

Defensive struggles continue to set in for Columbus, as their four errors led to two unearned runs.

Jared Goedert's solo home run in the fifth gave the Clippers their first run. At that point they were down 7-1. A Cord Phelps RBI single in the eighth was the only other Clippers run.

Through the first two games of the series, the Bisons have outscored the Clippers 25-5 and still have two games remaining in the series. Jeanmar Gomez (10-6, 2.39) takes the hill Monday night against Miguel Batista (2-0, 3.92).

Aeros fall in rubber match

Right-handed pitcher Steve Wright allowed two earned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning that broke a scoreless tie and proved to be the difference as the Akron Aeros mustered just two hits and were shutout in the rubber match of a three-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-0 Sunday at The Diamond.

Wright suffered the loss for Akron pitching seven innings, giving up three hits and striking out seven while walking just one.

Left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp recorded the win for Richmond tossing eight scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, walking three and striking out four. Right-hander Heath Hembree retired the side in order in the top of the ninth inning to earn the save.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the eighth inning, Wright gave up a lead off single to Wes Hodges, who advanced to second on a Kyle Bellows throwing error. Sharlon Shoop pinch ran for Hodges and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a Juan Perez single to give the Flying Squirrels (68-58) a 1-0 lead. Righty Cory Burns replaced Wright and, after a ground out that moved Perez to second, uncorked a wild pitch to move the runner to third. Skyler Stromsmoe singled home Perez as Richmond went on to the series win. Both runs were charged to Wright.

The Aeros (65-62) head to Bowie to begin a three-game series against the Baysox on Monday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 9-7 with a 3.87 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Oliver Drake, who is 1-2 with a 9.90 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Captains Hang on for 4-3 Win

Moises Montero cranked a two run home run and Captains starter J.D. Reichenbach was solid as the Lake County Captains came from behind to beat the Fort Wayne Tin Caps 4-3 on Sunday night. The win snapped a four game Captains skid.

The Tin Caps took the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Cory Spangenberg singled home Chris Bisson and the Tin Caps led 1-0. The lead did not last long Chase Burnette led of the bottom of the fifth inning with a double. Brian Heere followed with a double that scored Burnette. Nick Bartolone then doubled to score Heere and the Captains led 2-1.

The Captains extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Montero hit his third home run of the year, a two run shot, and the Captains led 4-1. The Tin Caps put up two runs in the top of the ninth inning to make it 4-3 and left the tying run at second base.

Reichenbach (7-1) got the win a no decision working six innings and allowing one run on seven hits while striking out three. Kyle Blair came in the seventh inning and pitched two innings allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one. Dale Dickerson picked up his third save of the season.

Tin Caps starter Mark Hardy (9-10) took the loss pitching 5.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out eight.

The Captains and Tin Caps play game three of the four game series on Monday at 7 PM with the Captains sending LHP Kirk Wetmore (3-2, 6.09) to the mound against RHP Adys Portillo (2-11, 7.32).
