Right-handed pitcher Cory Burns surpassed Randy Newsom as the Akron Aeros single-season saves leader notching his franchise best 30th save of 2011 in the teams 3-2 win over the Trenton Thunder in game two of a three-game set Wednesday at Waterfront Park.
Newsom’s mark of 29 saves stood for three seasons.
Left-handed pitcher Matt Packer tossed eight quality innings to record the win before giving way to Burns in the ninth. Packer allowed two earned runs on eight hits and struck out nine while walking none.
Left-hander Josh Romanski suffered the loss for Trenton pitching an inning and two thirds, allowing one earned run on one hit and striking out two while walking none.
The Aeros (57-54) jumped out in front in the top of the second inning. Chun Chen, Raul Padron and Michel Hernandez rapped three straight singles to open the frame. Kyle Bellows followed with an RBI single scoring Chen and giving the Aeros a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jordan Henry singled home Hernandez to make it 2-0.
It remained 2-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Thunder (57-53) battled back to tie it 2-2.
Juan Diaz hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning as Akron retook the lead 3-2 setting the stage for Burns’ record-setting save.
The Aeros will go for the sweep of the Thunder on Thursday. Akron has yet to determine a starter for Thursday’s contest. Trenton will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Shaeffer Hall, who is 10-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 2011. First pitch is at 12:05 p.m.
Kinston wins 5-3
Kinston scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, storming ahead for a 5-3 win over Myrtle Beach Wednesday morning at Historic Grainger Stadium.
Tyler Holt walked to start things for Kinston in the bottom of the first inning. He advanced to second base on a ground-out, then stole third. It was Holt’s 26th stolen bag of the season. Holt would score on Adam Abraham’s ground out. It was the team leading 49th RBI of the year from Abraham. Myrtle Beach came back a half inning later, when an errant throw on a ground ball from Zach Zaneski started the inning. A double by Ryan Strausborger got Zaneski to third base. A sacrifice fly by David Paisano would tie the score at one.
Myrtle Beach took a brief lead when Strausborger walked in the fourth inning and advanced to third thanks to a Santiago Chirino double. Strausborger scored on another RBI out by Paisano. Kinston tied it a half inning later when Jeremie Tice led off the fourth with a double and scored on an RBI single from Casey Frawley. The score stay tied a two until the top of the seventh inning. With Kinston starting pitcher T.J. House still on the mound, Leury Garcia started the frame with a walk. After stealing second base, he advanced to third on a ground out. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Travis Adair. House exited shortly after, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Myrtle Beach starter Justin Grimm was in line for the win after throwing six strong innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs. His relief did not prove to be as strong. With Ryan Kelly on the mound Kinston got on the comeback trail. Tyler Cannon singled, then scored from first base on a double by Doug Pickens. With the score tied at three, Delvi Cid loaded the bases by getting plunked with a pitch. With two-outs in the inning, Jordan Casas gave the Indians a 4-3 lead with a run scoring single. Kinston added insurance in the eighth inning, as Tice drew a walk and was replaced on the bases by Justin Toole. Toole got to second with a stolen base, but was still there with two outs in the inning. After a Tyler Cannon walk, Doug Pickens played the role of hero again with an RBI single.
Kinston bullpen took over from there, with Kyle Landis (6-0) picking up the win and Preston Guilmet getting his 27th save of the season.
The K-Tribe and Pelicans battle in the final game of the series on a Thirsty Thursday night at 6:30 pm. Mike Rayl will get the start for Kinston.
Loons Blank Captains 3-0
Chris Jacobs delivered a two-out single to center scoring Bobby Coyle in the fourth inning giving Great Lakes a 1-0 lead on Wednesday night. The Loons defeated Lake County 3-0 at Dow Diamond.
Leon Landry and Casio Grider each added RBI singles in the fifth inning increasing the lead to 3-0.
Rick Anton (1-0) picked up his first professional win tossing five scoreless innings of two hit baseball, no walks and two strike outs. Mike Goodnight (5-11) took the loss allowing three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three in 4.1 innings of work.
Lake County and Midland continue the series on Thursday night at Dow Diamond with first pitch set for 7:05PM. RHP Felix Sterling (2-0) takes the mound for the Captains against LHP Greg Wilborn (2-2) for the Loons.
Scrappers rout Yankees, 13-5
The Scrappers scored early and often, scoring 13 runs on 13 hits in a blowout victory over the Staten Island Yankees. Tony Wolters went 5-for-6 and Jerrud Sabourin drove in four runs in the victory. Sabourin, Alex Lavisky and Todd Hankins had two-hit nights.
Mahoning Valley scored in the first on an error by Staten Island shortstop Cito Culver. Bryson Myles came home to make it 1-0, the first of his three runs scored in the game. The Scrappers took advantage of four Yankees errors, scoring eight unearned runs. Sabourin drove in Hankins with a sacrifice fly in the second inning to make it 2-0 before the Yankees made it 2-1 with a run in the top of the third. The Scrappers scored four in the bottom of the third and five in the fourth to pull away. The Yankees scored single runs in the final four innings to cut the deficit.
Wolters’ five-hit night set a new season-high for hits in a game by a player this season. K.C. Serna previously had four hits in a game in early July. Will Krasne picked up the win in relief for the Scrappers. He improved to 2-1. Yankees starter Richard Martinez picked up the loss, falling to 2-1. The Scrappers and Yankees will play in the rubber match on Thursday night at 7:05 pm.
Note: Columbus had a scheduled off day on Wednesday.

Hope all is well.
Nice to give Burns his due. He's not thought of as much of an MLB prospect, but yet, all he has done in his career to date is prove, step by step, level by level, his desire and skill to succeed. He's the kind of guy you love to pull for. Maybe he will make it to Cleveland in the next couple years. Here's to following your dream, Cory.....we applaud you.
Thanks Chris. Yeah, no doubt Burns has the makeup and will to succeed. The only question that remains is if his lack of a true plus pitch exposes itself at AAA or even the bigs. That funky delivery though I think helps cover some things up. I for one would love to see him succeed and have a long ML career....so it will be interesting the next two years to see what he becomes.

Hate to say it, but not surprised by the OCab quote. Could see in his body language from the time Phelps was called up, that he felt slighted. Guess he was pouting big time when away from the cameras.
Also, nice to see Salazar recovering from his TJ surgery. Curious, how many arms in the Tribe system have had TJ surgery? Might be interesting to know.

Yes, more went on off camera with Cabrera than is known. Not sure offhand how many guys total in the system have had Tommy John but I would think off the top of my head that 20-24 have had it at some point.

You know, 20 years ago if we said that, people would have thought it was science fiction.
I'm guessing too many breaking balls at too early an age. I don't seem to recall this volume/proportion of serious arm injuries back in the 70's. But then again, without MRI's, a lot of pitchers back then suffered with 'sore arms and tired arms', not ever knowing their true injury.
A few guys off top of my head currently in org: Robbie Aviles, Hector Rondon, Alex Perez, Francisco Valera, Danny Salazar, Hector Ambriz, Nick Hagadone, Matt Langwell, Anthony Reyes, Eric Berger, Tyler Sturdevant, Vinnie Pestano, Elvis Arajuo, Cody Allen, Antwonie Hubbard, Jesus Colon and I am sure a few guys I am forgetting about.
