Around the Farm: August 4

Will Roberts
Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday's performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's game.

Will Roberts – SP, Mahoning Valley: 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.
Roberts allowed a single to the first batter of the game. He promptly picked that person off and then proceeded to retire the next 17 hitters in a row for easily his best outing yet as a pro. The 2011 5th round pick has now made 5 starts for short season Single-A Mahoning Valley and is 1-1 with a 2.18 ERA. In 20.2 innings he has allowed 18 hits, 5 walks, and has 16 strikeouts. He had been on top of his game his last two times out totaling 11.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K.

Juan Diaz – SS, Akron: 3-for-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 SB, E.
Diaz was a tablesetter on Thursday night as with a walk and three singles he reached base in four of his five plate appearances. Once on base he gave pitchers fits all night as he stole three bases, something that is not a big part of his game as he had just four stolen bases on the season coming into the game. Just to show he was human he committed a fielding error, his 18th of the season.
  • Cord Phelps – 2B, Columbus: 1-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, K. Phelps is a great handcuff to Kipnis at second, but do the Indians keep him there next year or move him to the outfield?
  • Luis Valbuena – SS, Columbus: 1-for-4, R, HR, RBI, 2K. You can only hope to contain Louie V!
  • Nick Johnson – 1B, Columbus: 0-for-4, 2 K. Slowly getting back but still just .237/.310/.431 in last 10 games.
  • Beau Mills – DH, Columbus: 2-for-3, R, HR, 2 RBI. Ends a 1-for-15 slide and hits his 2nd Triple-A homer.
  • Joe Martinez – SP, Columbus: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 6 K. Since moving into the Clippers starting rotation in three games has gone 18 innings and allowed 8 runs.
  • Chun Chen – C, Akron: 2-for-5, R, HR, 3 RBI, K. Chen with a bomb of a homer, his 12th. The power is not in doubt, it is his discipline and consistency of his at bats.
  • Nick Weglarz – DH, Akron: 2-for-4, R, 2B, RBI, K. First game back after some time off for minor eye and elbow injury.
  • Paolo Espino – SP, Akron: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. Espino is the Rodney Dangerfield of the Indians prospects. He gets no respect.
  • Delvi Cid – CF, Kinston: 2-for-4, R, SB. Disappointing year for the speedy outfielder, though injuries have been the main culprit.
  • Adam Abraham – 3B, Kinston: 1-for-4, 2 RBI. Nice steady season for the veteran minor leaguer hitting .239/.356/.425.
  • Mike Rayl – SP, Kinston: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2R/ER, 2 BB, 5 K. Good second outing for Rayl in Kinston with another quality start this year.
  • Giovanny Urshela – 3B, Lake County: 2-for-4, E. Having a better second half hitting .290/.299/.421 in 36 games, but needs more discipline.
  • Luigi Rodriguez – CF, Lake County: 1-for-1, 3 BB, SB. The good: reached base in all four plate appearances. The bad: two outs made on basepaths with pickoff and caught stealing.
  • Felix Sterling – SP, Lake County: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 7 BB, 5 K. Effectively wild on the night as he tip toed around 7 walks to allow just 1 run.
  • Cody Elliott – CF, Mahoning Valley: 1-for-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, 2 K. First pro homer a biggie with 3-run jack in 6th inning.
  • Jake Lowery – DH, Mahoning Valley: 1-for-3, 2B, RBI, BB. Almost half (20) of his 41 hits are for extra bases, and has nice 28 BB to 31 K ratio.
  • Leonardo Castillo – 1B, Arizona: 2-for-4, 2K. The young AZL team managed just four hits and Castillo had half of them.
  • Jake Sisco – SP, Arizona: 1.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R/ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Sisco seems to be petering out as his last two outings he has gone 4.0 innings total and allowed 10 H, 10 R, 3 BB, 5 K.
  • Manuel Carmona – RP, Arizona: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Interesting relief prospect in lower levels with 36 K in 23.2 innings and .193 BAA.
