The Akron Aeros stole a season-high five bases as they went on to sweep the Trenton Thunder in a three-game series winning the finale 7-4 Thursday at Waterfront Park.
Akron (58-54) also stole five bases May 11 at Erie. Three of those five bases were stolen by Juan Diaz, which is a 2011 high.
Right-handed pitcher Paolo Espino recorded the win for the Aeros tossing five scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out six while walking none. Right-hander Tyler Sturdevant got the last three outs to earn the save.
Left-handed pitcher Shaeffer Hall suffered the loss for Trenton pitching 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and striking out three while walking none.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Chun Chen hit a two-run home run to give the Aeros a 2-0 lead.
Akron added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Diaz opened the frame with a single and stole second when Chen struck out. With Raul Padron at the plate, Diaz stole third. Following a Padron strike out, Kyle Bellows singled Diaz home to increase the Aeros lead to 3-0. Bellows quickly stole second to move into scoring position. Nick Weglarz doubled him home to make it 4-0. Trenton’s Brad Halsey replaced Hall following the double and, with two outs and Weglarz on third, uncorked a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Later in the frame, Jordan Henry gave the Aeros a 6-0 lead on an RBI single.
The Thunder (57-54) got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a Damon Sublett two-RBI double to cut the lead to 6-2.
Trenton scored runs in each of the next two innings, but that was as close as they would get as Akron added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning and went on to the win.
The Aeros will begin a three-game home series against the New Britain Rock Cats on Friday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 7-6 with a 4.09 ERA in 2011. New Britain has yet to announce a starter for Friday’s game. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Clippers homer past Syracuse 5-2
On the strength of three home runs, the Clippers bashed their way a 5-2 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs.
Luis Valbuena got the Clippers on the scoreboard first with his solo shot to left in the fourth inning.
After surrendering the lead, Cord Phelps put his team back on top with a two-run homer to the Wendy's Hamburger Balcony. Beau Mills added two insurance runs as he laced a two-run home run down the right field line.
Joe Martinez (7-5) picked up the win after going 6.2 innings, striking out six and allowing two earned runs. Yunesky Maya fell to 1-8 after allowing all five Clippers runs.
Josh Judy came on in the ninth inning and struck out one to cement his 16th save of the year.
The Clippers and Chiefs continue their four game set with a 7:05 start Friday. Corey Kluber (5-7, 5.90) will start against Craig Stammen (8-5, 4.40).
Abraham's big hit gives Kinston 3-2 Win
Adam Abraham’s bases loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Kinston a 3-2 win over Myrtle Beach, Thursday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the win, Kinston (20-18, 58-49) takes the three game series from the Pelicans.
Kinston trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Tyler Cannon started the comeback with a lead-off double courtesy of Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Chad Bell. Argenis Martinez put Kinston on the scoreboard with a two-out double, driving in Cannon. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Kinston made the comeback complete. With one out, Martinez got things started with a single. Delvi Cid followed with an infield single. Myrtle Beach then replaced reliever Trevor Hurley with Joseph Ortiz who then walked Jordan Casas on four pitches. With the bases full, Abraham connected with a single. The hit scored Martinez and Cid, giving Kinston a 3-2 lead. Abraham’s team leading RBI total increased to 51.
Kinston got a great pitching performance from the bullpen, as Toru Murata and Preston Guilmet combined for 2 2/3 innings of no-hit ball. Murata (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, Guilmet got his 28th save in 29 attempts.
Mike Rayl made his home debut on the mound for Kinston and threw a great game after a tough start. Myrtle Beach started the game with three straight singles, going up 2-0 in the first inning. Rayl would settle down, allowing just one more hit in his final five innings of work. Rayl went six innings, giving up three hits and one run. He walked one and struck out six.
The K-Tribe welcomes the Salem Red Sox to town for the weekend. Game time 6:30 pm Friday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Clayton Cook will take the mound for Kinston.
Captains Blanked Again 1-0, by Loons
The Loons loaded the bases in the second inning on Felix Sterling. Charlie Mirabal walked driving in his first run of the season giving Great Lakes a 1-0 win over Lake County at Dow Diamond on Thursday night.
Greg Wilborn (2-2) picked up the win throwing five scoreless innings, allowing five hits, walking two and striking out six. Scott McGough pitched the ninth for his fourth save of the season. Felix Sterling (2-0) took the loss allowing a run on two hits, walking seven and striking out five in five inning of work.
Lake County will wrap up their road trip and series with Great Lakes on Friday night at Dow Diamond with first pitch set at 7:05PM. The Captains will start LHP JD Reichenbach (5-1) against LHP Ryan Christenson (7-7) for the Loons.
Scrappers blank Yankees, take two of three
Will Roberts and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout to lift the Scrappers to a 4-0 victory over the Staten Island Yankees. The right-hander faced the minimum in six innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. Roberts allowed a leadoff single to Staten Island outfielder Mason Williams, picked him off and retired the next 17 batters in a row.
Cody Allen threw two innings in relief and Enosil Tejeda pitched a perfect ninth, helping the Scrappers to their second straight win over the Yankees and two of three in the series.
Mahoning Valley got the offense it needed in the sixth when Cody Elliott homered to left centerfield, a three-run home run to put the Scrappers up 3-0. Two batters later, Jake Lowery doubled in Tony Wolters to make it 4-0.
Yankees starter Bryan Mitchell matched Roberts through the first five innings, facing the minimum and allowing just one hit. Wolters singled with one out in the first before Lowery hit into an inning-ending double play. Mitchell was charged with three of the runs and picked up the loss to fall to 0-3.
The Scrappers open up a two-game series against the Auburn Doubledays Friday night at Eastwood Field at 7:05 pm.
