In the 15th round of the 2010 Draft, the Indians have selected LHP Ben Wetzler out of Clackamas High School (OR).
Height: 6'1" Weight: 185 DOB: 09/12/1991 Bats: Left Throws: Left
AL Scout's Take: “He is a left-handed pitcher signed at Oregon State with a Mark Buehrle build who works quick and throws strikes.”
Jeff Ellis: Ben Wetzler is a high school lefty who has dominated in Oregon the last 2 years. As a Junior his ERA was 0.47 and as a Senior it fell to 0.33. So why is such a dominating lefty still here? Well while Holmes has very good command especially for his age, none of his pitches are eye popping. There isn’t a pitch right now that you look at and say that there is a plus pitch. Still here we are 450 picks in and the Indians take a lefty high schooler who knows how to pitch. In the past we might have seen a filler college Senior who would have been cheap. You can never have enough lefty’s, and even with average to below average stuff if you have plus command as a lefty you will make it to the big leagues some day, and if there is one thing that Holmes does have its plus command.
