Indians Option LaPorta To Columbus

The Cleveland Indians today announced they have activated infielder Andy Marte from the 15-day disabled list. To allow room on the 25-man roster, the Indians optioned outfielder Matt LaPorta to Triple-A Columbus.

Marte was placed on the disabled list on May 15 (retro to May 12) with a non-baseball medical issue. So far this year with the Indians he has hit .208 (5-24) with 4 runs scored, a triple, a home run and 7RBI in 15 games. Yesterday he made his only rehab appearance prior to today’s activation as he went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and a walk for the Lake County Captains in their 8-4 win over Wisconsin in Classic Park. He also played in a game Saturday that was suspended by weather.

LaPorta has hit .218 (26-119) with 13 runs scored, 4 doubles, a home run and 7 RBI in 35 games with the Indians this year (.277 SLG, .290 OBP, .567 OPS).

LaPorta has been slow to recover from his offseason toe and hip surgeries, predominantly the hip surgery, which has hurt his numbers. The hip issue has taken away from a lot of his ability to swing his hips and drive through the ball. He has played part time in Cleveland of late, and it looks like the Indians felt it best to send him to Triple-A where he could work through some swing issues and also get healthy.

In that case, why not send him to the DISABLED LIST. I am sick of the Indians hiding injuries to players, who then slump for several months before the team finally admits they have a terrible injury and need surgery, but they were forcing the player to play through it thinking they could somehow muster a superhuman effort despite injury. Hiding injuries and playing through them without proper rest is only going to exacerbate the existing medical problems. For a front office that usually thinks so much in long term, they are very negligent in this avenue!

Problem is, if they could DL them I believe they would. I may be mistaken, but I am pretty certain there has to be a legit medical reason and that he has to sign off it to go on the DL. We'll know more on this in the coming days, but it is one of those things where they have been playing him for 3-5 games a week because of the hip. His performance has been terrible....so put two and two together it looks like medically they can't.

Marte went on the DL due to an infection caused by an ingrown chest hair, so I think a team can come up with any reason to put a player on the DL. If the team needs LaPorta's permission, I don't see why he and his agent wouldn't agree to it. Playing 3-4 days a week while less than healthy, did him no good and almost guaranteed a trip back to Columbus, and I think, a cut in pay.

THis just makes me angry. I was supposed to have breakfast with him. I am kind of really disappointed by the way Acta has handled LaPorta. He seemed to keep jerking him around. At least now he will get to play every day. and hope to see him back up soon. Like really soon. But optioning him to AAA for MArte makes literally no sense for me.

I'm not entirely sure what is going on, just I know they believe he is still not 100% right, so is a big reason why he has not played everyday. The problem is, he has not hit all year. Time to send him down to regroup, and potentially get healthy where if need be they can DL him if it comes to it.

Also, I have not checked, but Grudz got hurt yesterday and may miss some time, so Marte's addition makes sense as they have a need there (Valbuena/Peralta can backup SS, Donald can backup 2B, and Marte backup 1B). But this is mainly about regaining LaPorta's confidence and getting him 100% healthy.

Let's just hope so. I am really pulling for him. It seemed like he was putting up some good at bats recently. Like in Chicago the other day I was infuriated that they took him out in the 9th for Branyan. LaPorta put up some great at bats and he was replace by a guy who strikes out a ton to come in cold. It didn't make too much sense to me, then again I am not a major league manager.
