In the 16th round of the 2010 Draft, the Indians have selected RHP Cody Allen out of St. Petersburg JC.
Height: 6'1" Weight: 200 DOB: 11/22/1988 Bats: Right Throws: Right
Jeff Ellis: Cody Allen is a very interesting pick, in January of 2009 he had TJ surgery and still came back to pitch this year. He pitches from a high ¾ slot and his fastball sits in the 88-91 range. It is his velocity and feel of his breaking pitches that got people’s attention when he came out of high school. He has a slider in the low 80’s, a curve in the mid 70’s, and good feel for a developing changeup. It is the down the road ability that those breaking pitches could become plus pitches which sure got the Tribe's attention I am sure. Allen is very young and raw as he just finished his sophomore year at a junior college after missing all of last season due to injury. He could be a bit hard to sign as he was fairly well thought of coming out of high school, and is still only a sophomore. Then again after having major arm surgery he might be happy to sign his contract and see what the Indians can do to make sure he never has to worry again.
Signing Update (June 11): Allen looks like he will be a hard sign as he is requesting 5th to 10th round money. These demands have a way of changing as the draft signing season carries on through the summer, so if he comes off he demands a little he could be a late summer signing.
