Clippers drop first game in Indianapolis, 5-0
The Indianapolis Indians shut out the Columbus Clippers, 5-0 on Friday night at Victory Field to begin a four game road trip. The blanking by Indianapolis was only the second time this season the Clippers were held scoreless, losing to Charlotte, 5-0 during the last road trip.
Brian Friday started the scoring for Indianapolis in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI triple to left field, driving in Brandon Moss. The Indians would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Kevin Melillo hit his third home run of the season off of Columbus starter, Aaron Laffey. Laffey's outing was over after giving up a double to the next batter, Pedro Alvarez. Laffey went 4.2 innings of work, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and striking out three.
The Clippers had an opportunity in the sixth inning as Michael Brantley recorded a one-out single, stole second, and took third on a throwing error. Brian Bixler followed with a walk and a stolen base, but Carlos Santana and Wes Hodges both struck out against former Clipper, Vinnie Chulk.
The bottom of the seventh inning saw Indianapolis score three times against reliever Jeremy Sowers. Sowers only gave up one earned run in the inning, but an error by Anderson Hernandez cost the Clippers. Brian Myrow had an RBI single to left and then Luke Carlin had a sacrifice fly to right, driving in Myrow.
Laffey's opponent was Michael Crotta, who went 5.1 innings, giving up just three hits and striking out two. Columbus struggled against the Indians' pitching staff, recording only one extra-base hit, a Carlos Santana double in the first. The Clippers were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position on the night and left six men on base.
The Clippers go back to work tomorrow at 7 p.m. trying to even up the series. Jeanmar Gomez (3-5, 5.86 ERA) will get the start against Indians pitcher Daniel McCutchen (2-3, 4.72 ERA).
Berger Shines as Aeros Win Again 3-2
Rain affected the Aeros game again Friday but lefty starter Eric Berger made sure it ended in another win as Akron defeated host Harrisburg 3-2 in seven innings. The crowd of 5,482 fans at recently renovated Metro Bank Park witnessed the delayed game until a threatening thunderstorm ended action just before the eighth inning. Berger earned the win with a complete game in his most dominant Double-A start and the victory over the Senators (28-27) was the fifth in a row for the red-hot Aeros (25-30).
Akron threatened in the very first inning after a 33-minute delay to the scheduled first pitch time. Harrisburg starter Andrew Kown permitted back-to-back singles to Tim Fedroff and Cord Phelps to start the game before designated hitter Lonnie Chisenhall grounded into a fielder’s choice for the first out. Right fielder Matt McBride then flied to Edgardo Baez in right for what looked like a routine run-scoring sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, Baez nailed Fedroff at the play at the plate for the first of his two assists on the night.
The two starters Kown and Berger matched each other pitch for pitch early as neither team could manufacture a run. In fact, after the top of the first, no runner from Harrisburg or Akron even reached first base until John Drennen singled with two outs in the top of the fifth. That hit did not lead to a meaningful rally, as the Senators were the first team to get a run on the board later that frame.
With two outs against Berger in the fifth, veteran left fielder Marvin Lowrance provided a double to left-center to score Baez and give host Harrisburg a 1-0 advantage. Catcher Jhonaton Solano then followed with an RBI single of his own to create the two-run deficit.
The lead would not last for long as the Aeros returned the favor in the top of the seventh inning. Chisenhall drew a walk, McBride singled and then both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Kown. A Beau Mills groundout then scored Chisenhall and brought the score to 2-1. Shortstop Carlos Rivero followed with a game-tying RBI double to knock Kown out of the ballgame. New reliever Hassan Pena entered the game and permitted another extra-base hit as Drennen delivered the game-winning triple to center field.
Berger cruised yet again in the bottom of the seventh inning while the storms then caused the start of a long delay. Following nearly two more hours of rain and storms in Harrisburg, the umpires declared the game’s official end and the Aeros earned their fifth straight win.
The complete game for Berger (2-4) was the first of the season for any Akron pitcher as he tied a 2010 team-high with seven innings pitched. He also became the first Aero in nearly 10 months to record 10 strikeouts in a contest and allowed just five hits and one walk overall. Kown (1-1) took the loss for Harrisburg despite only facing serious trouble in the top of the seventh after six shutout frames. On the offensive end, Drennen was the only Akron player with two hits and his game-winning triple was the deciding blow.
This three-game series continues Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg. Lefty Kelvin De La Cruz (1-3, 5.84 ERA) will be on the mound for the now-scorching Aeros as they aim for a sixth consecutive victory against Aaron Thompson (2-8, 6.15 ERA) and the Senators.
Kinston Comeback Falls Short as Winston-Salem Wins 2-1
The K-Tribe was a hit away from a ninth inning comeback, but it was not to be as the Dash beat the Indians 2-1 Friday night in Winston-Salem.
With Winston-Salem leading 2-0 going into the top of the ninth inning, Jason Kipnis got things going with a lead-off single. Kipnis went 3-for-3, reaching base safely four times and supplying half the hits in the game for Kinston. After Dash reliever Kyle Bellamy struck out Abner Abreu and Kyle Bellows, Lucas Montero kept the game going with an RBI double off of the center field wall. Montero went 2-for-3 on the evening. Down a run, Kinston's Doug Pickens hit a deep fly ball that was caught at the warning track in right field to end the game.
Winston-Salem picked up the game’s first run when Jason Bour delivered a sacrifice fly to score Seth Loman in the bottom of the second inning. Kinston starting pitcher Joe Gardner battled his control early, hitting two batters and walking three through his first three innings of work. With a good defense behind him, he was able to get out of trouble early. Loman would strike again in the bottom of the sixth inning, leading off with his Carolina League leading 13th home run. Gardner (3-1) took his first loss in the Carolina League, giving up two runs on five hits through six innings. Gardner walked three and struck out one. Travis Turek had a good outing from the bullpen, giving up just one hit in two innings. He walked none and struck out two. Winston-Salem starter Terry Doyle (2-2) went eight strong innings for the win, giving up just four hits while striking out eight. Doyle did not walk a batter. Bellamy picked up his second save of the season.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday for game three of the four game set. Kinston's T.J. McFarland (6-1, 1.78) will tangle with Winston-Salem's Nevin Griffith (4-1, 2.34) in a battle of the two best ERA's in the Carolina League. Game time 7pm from Winston-Salem.
